*****BEWARE OF SARCASM*****
is it me, or is there no sweeter sound than that of a newly installed AMF ball return making that beautiful loud humming sound?
or how about those pinsetters...i dont know about you, but i can always use those 3 or 4 extra minutes to figure out how to shoot my spare while the machine resets...and the 5 or 6 minutes it takes to load the full rack definitely helps read the lanes better.
how about all the racks without the 7 or 10 pin coming down?...better yet, the ones where one pin gets jammed and they all go down like dominoes?
and i just cant get enough of those corporate AMF center prices...bowling is definitely worth $5 a game...wouldnt you agree?

train wreck and bob7,
the place is a joke...not one person that works there knows anything about bowling(its family run and they ALL have attitudes). we had a problem today with a pin stuck in the pinsetter...what a surprise, and because noone knew how to fix it, they just moved us instead of going back there. there was absolutely no oil down on the lanes, which doesnt make it worth $20 an hour to bowl on, and the 7 and 10 pin just decided to not come down half the time...they want $5.50 a game when there is another house a few miles away that wants a little more than half that, in a much better bowling atmosphere. also, i can go to jersey lanes right over the bridge 5 minutes away and bowl for $1.50 per game...oh yeah, those are perfectly maintained brunswick anvillanes. this new place is doing EVERYTHING wrong, which is exactly what closed down the other 10+ bowling alleys on staten island. the arcade and billiards hall are bigger than the bowling part of the building.

The AMF owned houses in my neck of the woods are $4.25 a game for open bowling, don't know what the league prices are. The two houses I bowl in for leagues use AMF equipment but are independently owned, so the open bowling price ranges from $1 a game (if a league bowler) to $3 a game (if not).

$7.50 a game wow thats alot, leagues must cost alot too
i probably would have to do one league instead of two or
three leagues a week and like 8 games of practice a week, if it
cost that much for me.
i would get a job at the bowling ally part time
-
I live in an area where there are three houses within five miles of each other.
One was AMF until July 1st. It was the best of the three. I know it has a lot to do with the individual management, but their lane man was the best, the manager was great and the rates weren't any higher than the other lanes. AMF sold their center to the owner one of the other center's. That other center's lanes are never consistant and the machinery is always breaking down. They are also going to add a casino which I'm not excited about. So, I wish this AMF house would stay.

i TRIED getting a job there...theyre only staffing family and not a SINGLE one knows ANYTHING about bowling. i have a good idea of what they need to do to make some sort of profit, afetr seeing 50+ houses bowling JBT tourneys nationwide the past 2 years. they have given me the cold shoulder every time i tried to inquire, and now i am going to try to keep people from wasting their money.

The amf place i bowl at isjust fine, nothing wrong with the equipment or nothing and its only 2.25 for the public and 1.50 or cheaper for me.
The ppl just need to learn how to lay a little more oil down, but i guess it's ok i use my Rip thats tracked out pretty bad to bowl there

don't you love it when people that work at the bowling ally have no clue about about bowling, like when you go ask them do you have any sport shot and they kind of give you a look that you can tell that they don't know what sport shot is and they say no but then there is some else working that
knows whats going on and then they say yes we do.

the people at this place dont know what the ball return is. its like when you go to the bathroom and you flush the toilet...and the water shoots up and hits you in the face...and then as your leaving you see a sign - "Warning - water may hit you in face". thats the kind of staff they have...and if that makes no sense, you can thank my favroite coimic, lewis black, for just making me have to use that statement.

Not one corporate owned center within an hour of me here.
I will say this....in my area the Brunswick Machines are the worst by far. When they break down they stay broked down for a week or 2 at a time. There is one center in particular that gives 5 minutes of shadow balls during a summer tournament run there. 4 people per pair....and you are lucky if each of those 4 people get 4 balls total to warm up. SUPER SLOW!

V12 and hotwire - either of you every bowl at country lanes out there? still 5 bucks a game, but the times i've bowled there (touneys mostly) nothing has every broken down. probably the best house in SI. i see the new showplace lanes is sucking major balls already...
you guys want cheap, come to brooklyn and bowl at my center, shell lanes, 2 bucks a game all summer, and saturdays all year. you'll think you died and went to bowling heaven.
on edit: btw, i've only bowled at chelsea once, about 5 or 6 years ago when it was "cheap", now its 7.50 a game?!?!???!??!? if you think thats high, go to port authority and pay 12 bucks a game.

i USED to bowl at country lanes...until the shot got so ridiculous that there were 5 300 games on one pair during a winter league 2 years ago and 4 junior bowlers barely averaging 195 were bowling 300's. averaging 220 there is like being at 200 everywhere else...which is why i started bowling in jersey 2 years ago...the junior bowlers tour has opened up a completely new view of bowling, very different from that of staten island. country lanes is the ONLY house here, and i think it will officially stay that way in a few months when this new place ends up closing again. ive bowled in 40+ different houses in the past 2 years, and only about 4 of them were worse than country overall(taking the easiness of the condition into account).

This is a column that I'm glad I read! Makes me feel better about bowling in NC. I have about 4/5 different Centers within 1/2 hour from where I live. Summer bowling special in the nearest AMF house is $1.50 per game. House is maintained GOOD and the manager is a BOWLER! Then there is a BUFFALOE (name of centers) group of lanes that are nearby. One of this group has a SPORT SHOT league where the weekly cost is $10. Again I'm glad I read this column .. feel much better!

for anyone that lives in or anywhere near staten island...DONT COME HERE TO BOWL!!! its as simple as that people...its as simple as that. if you happen to be nearby, consider this...jersey lanes - $1.50 until noon, $2 from noon till 6...linden lanes $2 all day until after 6, both of these places are actually closer in mileage than country lanes, including the bridge. the EZpass cost is made up by the cheaper bowling, and the lanes are very well maintained with a good amount of oil at both houses. dont contribute to the joke that has become blowing...excuse me, BOWLING...on staten island.

The bulk of the AMF houses in Illinois cost in peak, 3.50-3.75. Off peak, a dollar less. If everyone were to complain about prices why not join the PBA. However, PBA members don't get a discount at Brunswick Zones, even-though brunswick is under contract with the PBA.

When in Denver you must take time to experience AMF Aurora which is also called "The Barber Shop College of Bowling Alleys".
-Lanes are upslope to the arrows and then downslope to the pins.
-Manager announces practice then goes in the back without actually turning on the machines...ten minutes wasted with no one at the counter.
-Unsanctioned league with inhouse secretary; makeups were not posted to standings. Wrong two teams bowling for championship.
hell, yes, i'm bitter....

Yes, I urinate on my ball...it doesn't give me better reaction or make my hands tougher. It just makes me fell better.

hotwire - i agree, the shot at country is ridciulous. i'd bet anything that 90% of the 220+ averages at country wouldnt average 180 on program 3 at my house, very challenging shot.
btw, what part of SI are you in? i noticed one of your posts said you can go to jersey and bowl which is 5 minutes away right over the bridge, so you must be all the way at the @$$-end of the island.

v12's description is pretty accurate. coming from the goethals bridge, i live off the richmond avenue exit on the staten island expressway(country lanes is off the clove road exit, a few miles past richmond). jersey lanes is just over the goethals bridge, right off of bayway avenue in elizabeth, nj. go to www.jerseylanes.com to get the exact address...its a fairly simple shot, but its usually fresh and extremely caring for equipment. linden lanes is right off of route 1 south, turning right at stiles street. these 2 places are both 100 times better than country lanes, where a 300 game is like getting front 6 anywhere else. they actually had abc investigate the scoring a few years back(2002?), and they changed the shot for about 3 months before going back to the funnel it is today. i went there after not bowling for a month, and shot 279 my first game without practice throwing the ball all over the place.

how true...how true...
after i left country, i moved over to another house on staten island that recently closed down, victory lanes. it was 10 wood lanes, old and worn, and i bowled in a junior league with leftover oil from friday night. i was the only kid on the entire island that was able to average 200+ there, and it was absolutely hilarious watching the kids from country come and try to bowl...a 180 average was a great day for any of them. when i went back to country, my scores skyrocketed. if you ever want to screw up your game and boost your ego to the point of no return, go to country lanes and bowl. the new showplace is looking to be the same way as far as the shot goes...fresh christmas tree 37' with forgiveness all over the place...and if youre lucky enough to get no 7 and 10 pins in the rack like amf is known for, you can easily average 260.
