Best way to spare the "sleeper" leave
« on: March 07, 2005, 05:16:14 AM »
Was is the best way to spare the 2-8, 3-9 sleeper leaves?  cross-lane or straight-up? hook-it or straight at it?  Especially on toughter (flatter) sport conditions?  I've seen the pros on tv do both?  Which way will give me the best chance for making these?

For the 2-8 I hook the ball.  It gives me a better chance to convert if I'm a bit thin (I'll get both with the ball) and still converts if I'm dead on the nose.  If I miss left I miss the spare if hooking or going straight.  I rarely leave the 3-9 alone (in fact I can't remember doing this in years).  If I leave a 3-9 it's usually in combination with the 10 or 6-10.  For this you have to hook the ball; if you go straight you'll usually chop the 3-9 out of the spare.  The ball has to hit the 3 and 10 pins and hook into the 9 to convert.

Note:  for single pins going straight gives you a tad more room for error.  For double woods hooking gives you that same tad of room for error.

for the normal house shot and sometimes ez tourney shot it is by far easier to just hook at the left/right sleepers. on the THS ur ball will recover from bad shots and will still give you a shot at picking up the spare. however, if you come across a sport shot or tougher pattern it is by far easier to just throw plastic straight at it or at a slight angle, but you still have to be very accurate.

pros normally throw straight at sleepers cuz it basically takes out the guess work of the pattern. pros bowl on much tougher patterns so it is prlly more consistent if they just throw straight, and not worry about how the condition will affect their ball if they hook at the sleeper or any other spare. you have to remember though that these guys are pros for a reason, they are way more accurate than you or me.

i think for the average bowler it will prlly be easier to just hook at the sleepers, you will prlly get more than you miss in the long run. personally, i can do both, but am much more comfortable just hooking at the sleepers. but if the pattern is tuff or im missing the sleeper consistently, i will just throw my spare ball straight to cover the sleeper.

THS, hook it.  Sport, throw plastic.  On Sport, you can still hook it, but you never know which section of the lane is playing what so the ball may take off or sit and never move.
I throw it at an angle, but I throw plastic.  My first leave I threw my hook, and watched the ball just sputter down the lane, never turning in.

D <~~~~ Used to be terrible wiffing 10 pins.  Now through much practice, can wiff any single pin spare at any time.

double wood: I always hook at it. If I throw straight with plastic a little left or right and back pin stands.
