Oil/Sport condition ball choice
« on: January 22, 2013, 07:40:20 AM »
Good morning

I am debating on purchasing a new ball for heavy oil and/or a sport condition shot.  I've been looking at the Storm Lucid or Roto Grip Defiant Soul.  Which would be better?  I am a medium speed, medium revs player.  If you have a better suggestion, please feel free to share your opinions.

Thanks

Either ball will do the job. The biggest factor will be how either ball is drilled up and what surface you match it up with.

It's going to be one of those situations that will need to experimented with to get the reaction you want.

sport condition does NOT mean heavy oil.  Cannot offer insight into current equipment though since I am still out of the sport save for two or three games at an annual office party (and where a Sonic X is too much ball).

You're right that a sport oil pattern doesn't mean more oil but most of the time does mean a flatter oil pattern which a stronger ball or layout or both might be needed.

With so many variables one can not give any 1 correct answer because there are several answers that could get the job done. Without knowing any of your stats or even a possible oil pattern there will be limited helpful responses.

I am also about 15 mph with med rev rate.  I have a Lucid and it is too much ball for most conditions.  I have found that the sport conditions require less ball and not more ball.  I had to polish the lucid to get it down the lane far enough to make it useful.  The Defiant Soul is supposed to be stronger, so that ball is not even a consideration for me.
14lb 15.5 mph at pins 325 Revs. Silver Coach, Ball Driller. In Bag:  Storm Pro-Motion, Hyroad X, Matchup, Code Red.

spot on with the sport condition statement
volume tends to lighter on these patterns it seems, save a few of them
lighter vollume makes you adjust constantly, also matters what surface you and everyone else on the pair uses
to much surface to start and you can burn up the heads, which makes a tough shot even tougher.
i bowl a fair amount of different sport patterns, equipment wise:
a few for short, a few for long
4,5,6 for medium patterns with varying pin-pap distance and mostly drillings that favor arcing predictable back-end motion.
talking surfaces, always go to the lanes shiny, you can adjust down from there, if its to dull during practice, then it goes back in the bag, not useable...

I'm partial to Ebonite brands, have had many over the past 5 years and i adjust surface plenty, no issues with anything "dying" or not performing.
good cover maintenance takes care of that
great medium pieces in no particular order
505t
503t
gamechanger
508a
cyclone

and all take surface change well with exception being cyclone (blk/gold) and 508a, for me, they are better left OBB

good heavy oil pieces
715t
716t
challenge
vow
outburst

my choice for sport patterns is something that is controllable, usually stay away from the skid/flip reaction.  My choice right now is between two balls that are smooth:  Mass Eruption which is a smooth hybrid from Columbia and the Oath which is a solid from Columbia 300.  I have both with a pin down layout and they seem to work well for sport conditions.

Modern Marvel and Marvel Pearl are both very useful for me on flat oil.

The other factor that I didn't see mentioned is the lane surface/topography. If you are bowling on wood lanes, more likely there is more friction built into the lanes and a weaker ball may be needed, or adding polish to one of the choices you mentioned. If bowling on synthetics, it depends on age and make. The house I bowl in has newer synthetics (not sure on the make, but believe they are Brunswick Pro-Anvilane) and they play much much slicker than the patterns advertise. Plus the topography of the lanes are horrible, the outside boards slope slightly away from the center, so even when we play on Cheetah, it is difficult to play outside the 4-5 board. All of this, including everything everyone else mentioned, should be considered when making a ball choice.

I've thrown my Aura on a few different sport shots and have had a good look on every one.
