USBC- Why are people upset?
« on: May 01, 2005, 02:58:43 AM »
So the USBC is PROPOSING new regulations governing ball construction and drilling specifications.  SO WHAT!

Why are so many of you already whining about things that you know so little about really?

Will the new regs REALLY make that much difference? I'll bet you really don't know.

What makes you think that the ball makers can't overcome some silly little hurdles? They have already been able to completely circumvent the laws of physics imposed on them by the "static weight" rules.

Are we supposed to lower the rim in basketball to accomodate shorter players?
Are we supposed to change the rules in football to help the disadvantaged?

The sports I have mentioned are just a couple, but without fail, all sports have a set of rules intending to standardize the game play as much as possible. That is what the USBC is attempting to do. Return the game to a state where it can be played and won by the players with the most physical talent and abilities.

I have 23 bowling balls. Most of them are drilled of center and have weightholes in them. Like most of you, my stuff will become obsolete with the passing of the new regulations, so don't tell me I don't get it, I do.

If all sports could be altered with using better equipment, where would be the incentive for football, basketball, or other sports players to work harder, get stronger, and practice to be the best they can be?

Let them make their rules. Maybe then some of you will really learn how to bowl instead of just buying a new ball that makes up for your lack of talent.

And maybe you will spend the time to practice and actually learn how to roll the ball in different situations to be effective.

A lot of you will be P.O.'d at this post. But it is the truth. I'm not that old, and I started right before bowling began to change so much. I have been here to see it change from a game of skill, strength, and accuracy to a game of who can afford the most equipment. A sport is supposed to be won by the superior player. A game is just played for fun.

DO YOU WANT BOWLING TO BE CONSIDERED A SPORT, OR JUST A GAME?

Hi, bowling snob here ( LOL ).  Just wanted to wait and see what some of the opinions were before saying anything else.

I say, let the USBC make any rule it wants to. I also agree that they should not stop at regulating the balls, but also every aspect of the game needs to be regulated and enforced. Only that way can we assure that we are all playing the same game on the same conditions.

I don't care WHAT they do, just make it the same exact thing for EVERYBODY, I'll be more than glad to take my chances under those conditions.

I'm not really the snob I come over like, I just remember when balls were limited, shots were limited, and the bowlers had to be able to overcome differing conditions with skill and ability.

My average is 223 right now. No, I am not that good, but I have always been in the top averages in this area. I would gladly lower it due to tougher conditions and ball regulations. After a short period of correction, I am sure my average would still end up higher than most and I would still be better than most of the competition I face. I was in 1982 using a yellow dot on 38 foot oil, I was in 1990 on short oil using a slate U-dot, and I am now using an Inferno.

I took the time to practice and learn the hows and whys of the game. I know why you leave tenpins. I know why you leave four pins, and eight pins, and nine pins, etc...

And I know how to NOT leave them also. I have bowled and won, bowled and lost. I have drilled balls in a shop and tried to keep up with modern technology. I know modern drilling techniques and also studied physics just so I could understand why certain things worked better for some than others.

To make it short, I LIKE the new regulations on balls. But I do not think it should stop there. I think the entire game should be regulated and enforced to ensure the game and its integrity.  Make it a sport where the skilled are rewarded and the non-skilled are not. Find a way to do this and maybe bowling would become the respected olympic type sport that all serious bowlers would like it to be.

And if you have a pap that doesn't conform well to the new specs, then learn to throw the ball correctly. There used to be a right way and a wrong way to throw the ball. One that worked much better than others and that was due to the limited physics involved in ball construction, and THE BOWLER had to learn to throw the ball properly to get it to perform. Now with the modern balls and drillings, you no longer have to learn how to throw it correctly, just drill it correctly. Thats just crap. There SHOULD be a right and wrong way to throw it.

No offence but are you really that dense?

If you are a low tracker with a PAP that is close to grip center you will not be able to have long pin to PAP distances without having the CG swung out toward PAP and if you are a high tracker you will not be able to have short pin to PAP distances without having the CG swung away from PAP.
I can't change my PAP even though I have spent countless hours trying, but I can adapt to just about anything through speed, rotation angle, and revs. I can play anywhere from the twig to the 20 board on a sport shot so don't give me that crap about people need to change their PAP to conform to the proposed rule. Some of the best bowlers in the world do not have muliple different levels of axis tilt and they should not be forced to learn one when there are many better ways to control scoring without restricting the way they are allowed to drill the ball.
By the way what is the right way and the wrong way to roll a ball, because evidently even though I have been told by several people that I have one of the smoothest rolls they have seen I must not have because I will not match up well to their CG restriction on some conditions. Please enlighten me.
Last time I checked being a high or low tracker wasn't a bad or a good thing you just need to have the ball drilled a little different. What now we are all supposed to learn the "perfect" PAP location for this new rule.

Brunslinger,

Let's say we agree to disagree. But you missed my point twice. It's not the 175-200 average guys that you the big shooters complain only do well because of ball drillings that the USBC is concerned about. It's you. The guys that are very good bowlers that use ball set ups to shoot scores that you absolutely should not be shooting. The very good bowlers that have shot the many high 800 and 900 series should never have shot them. They were on soft conditions with high powered equipment matched up to their great games. These are the guys the USBC wants to slow down. They could give a chit about us average out for competition but also fun league bowlers.

I wish this would sink in. It is absolutely not the guy that averages 200 that really is a 185 -190 bowler. Those are the guys that pizz you guys off, but not the ones who are being targeted by the USBC. But, they are the ones that the USBC will lose if you take away their 1 or 2 nights of enjoyment. The USBC better get this in their thick skulls before it's too late or disaster may well strike. Plus I want to know which leagues, especially handicap ones that will truly police the balls being used by the leagues. I'd bet very few!!!!

Precision,

I agree with everything you say. I've been bowling for 32 years. I have went thru the rubber, plastic, urethane, reactive and particle eras. I bowled on lacquer, urethane and synthetic. I have seen bowlers drop by the wayside for numerous reasons. Long league schedules, high cost, too much of other things to do. With the bowlers left that I know, increasing the cost of a ball, making it so it's harder for the average guy to score and have fun will wreck what little support for bowling the USBC still retains.  The ABC screwed up when they allowed short oil. It gave guys who never threw much of a hook a taste of hooking the ball more. They liked it. Then ball companies made balls that hooked even more. Many of these guys fell in love with watching their ball hook instead of being more well rounded bowlers. Now the USBC who started this mess wants to take away the drug. Bowling is dying not because of easy lane conditions as many on this forum purport, but because of the change in lifestyles that has happened over the last 25 years.

Everyone has to quit blaming lane conditions, they may very well be the last thing holding the sport together. If you're good and don't like softer conditions don't bowl on them. Leave them to the hackers. Group together with other good bowlers and have your own leagues on tougher shots. Oh, but wait, that won't work because many of you guys live for bowling in the hack leagues and taking their money and beating the hell out of them. You can't have it both ways guys. Tell your USBC rep to vote down these proposals, they will wreck bowling not help it. Short sightedness may well give a view of the perfect world for bowling but it will drop an atomic bomb on the real world of the game.

Sport.

We should all have to use balls supplied at the lane, as well as be allowed no extemperous equipment whatsoever.

May the best bowler win!

If the USBC tells me that I have 6 brand new illegal balls (due to balance holes in them), then I think that I'll have a lot more time to spend at the house (from lack of bowling) and a lot more money (from the money that I would have otherwise spent on league fees).  Why, I wouldn't even need a USBC card!
