Ok so...

I have a question. Leaving aside the phrase " benchmark ball", does anyone start their league night with one of their weaker balls?  I'm hesistant to try it because really, I may not have anything to " ball down" to. But saying that, My thoughts are, that if I'm forced inside more, I'll just grab a stronger ball.  This seems backwards, but does anyone out there do this?

On wood ths, I 'can' start with a wrecker and play with that for all 3 games easy.  Game one I play the track area, then I migrate deeper as needed.  The last 10 weeks of league on wed nights I gave up forcing my defiant edge, nano pearl, and polished critical theory (when only being able to use for one game anyways).  I boughg a wrecker, had more fun, and averaged ~245 (last 10 weeks) and won the league.  Its a much simpler approach if u ask me.

It makes total sense to start outside with a weak ball on a typical house shot.  Many bowlers make the mistake of hugging the oil with a strong ball, then trying to go weaker rather than moving in to follow the oil.  I almost always start with a weak ball, sometimes even urethane, on a house shot.  When the shot breaks down for the weak ball, I grab a strong pearl, and jump in toward 3rd arrow.

Joe, this is a valid method if the lanes allow it. I like to start with a weak ball with a strong hand position. I have roughly 4 boards from most to least in hand positions. This allows me to stay where I am with just hand changes. Once they start to hook, now I adjust with feet/eyes. When I have my act together, everyone just moves left away from me. It doesn't always work, depends a lot on the other bowlers.

Good point TJ.... Really does make a huge difference on other bowlers on the pair (actually myself and Terry had a conversation regarding this - he had said sometimes better to start with weaker)...and by the way, isn't it time to change your user name?

I tried at the beginning of last year starting way right and playing up the gutter outside of everyone. It worked ok, except the oil pattern was never the same for me, as I was playing with everyone else's inconsistent carry down from their break points. Needless to say it was quite squirrely.  I have moved to learning to play more at or left of 3rd arrow out to the "corner" about at the 5-10 board, depending on the shot, and hand position down, or ball down if necessary, but hoping to play inside everyone else, to only have me to really adjust for.

This is actually a good approach and one that helped me win money this past year.  Typically I would start outside with my Frantic going around the 4th-8th board.   Most everyone else would be deeper, so it made things simpler with less adjustments needed on my end.  Then as the night went on, I would go up to my Outlaw or Infinite Theory, depending how the lanes were playing. 

Now did this work every night?  No.  There were times where I would have to move deeper and throw more aggressive equipment at the start.  But it is an approach that worked a good percentage of the time at the house I bowl at.

We have a guy here that bowls with a Scout/R and average 235.  It all depends on the bowler and the shot.  Not every house is equal, and not every bowler is equal.

I concur with this approach. Changing hand positions and small moves with my feet allow me to stay away from the thundering herd.

Your own style of release can have a big impact on the strategy to employ.  Lots of young high rev guys can start out inside the oil line on a house shot, and effectively play the back end more than the outside dry.  On the other end of the spectrum, some really straight players can hang around outside even after the shot has burned up for the rest of us. Being a more of a tweener myself, I will sometimes use different equipment to try either strategy.  The key for me is use something weak outside and go for something stronger and more angular as I move in.
