Title: Old vs. New equipment IN LEAGUE
Post by: mainzer on January 20, 2009, 04:46:45 AM
Do you use older or newer gear? Why is that your choice? Also What characteristics do you like about your choice?

As most on here know I like MoRich stuff for most of my situations but in League the newer Mo stuff is a little much in the hitting and hooking dept, I seem to blow alot of shots out or have stuff setting up a bit early, control drillings help a little but then I end up with a shot specific ball. Thus I have taken to using older gear. I have used a Primal Rage in most situations other than Thursday nights. I like the PR because of the read I get it tells me where oil is and isn't, doesn't over react, easy to adjust with, and I don't have to change balls in transition. I have seen this with all of the older gear I have used the past few years, Cuda/C, Piranha/C. IMO what I described above is much more important to putting scores up than the hookingest, snappiest, newest ball on market.

What do you guys think?

I use some older stuff.. Rock on, Scouts, Wow, Sonicx, game pearl.. I just like some of the smoother reactions from them.. I also use some newer stuff on wed morning and fri night.. I guess it just depends what i wanna put in my bag on those days...lol

Oil patterns while modern (no short oil) have been light in volume lately. As such, I've gone retro with a purple rhino pro, teal rhino pro, Morich Saraha and a Fury Pearl (that I think is a TE since it's really weak).

Other stuff is just too strong..

I'm weired,I have an old Track Phenom and my Intense that I love but try not to use them much.I will bring them along to bowling with me incase I need them but I would rather beat up the newer stuff.I also don't buy new anymore, just used stuff so when I find something I really like I'll hang on to it for awhile.

Honestly, for most house shots, it really doesn't matter what you use you can score with anything. Personally, I don't like changing out gear every time I go to the center, especially for a house league, so I usually just use my "normal" stuff however, I know some guys only bring B-Team gear because they don't want to wear out their good stuff during league. I don't think either choice will have a significant impact on scoring since, again, most house shots are open enough to allow scoring with just about anything. I mean, I shot 300 with my N'Sane LevRg earlier this year, but I've seen a guy dominate the same pattern with an old, green Nitro/R. It's just the sad reality of most house shots. You don't really have to think too hard about petty items such as ball selection. lol

ive been kickin but with my Orange warlock and Solid Uranium, and gold nugget. all are them are "old" by most standards
Warlock: made in 1997
Uranium: made in 2004
Nugget: Made in 2003

so ya dont always need brand new stuff.

I wouldn't even say its house shots.. The have been minimal new technology in bowling ball with the limitations set by the usbc.. Yes there is new technology but if you get anything to friction it will hook.. I know guy no matter what the pattern is he carries 2 old black hammers a burgundy hammer and a old ebonite ice. and he get around the ball.. He not a down and in guy at all. And he carries a 230 average..

I use some old stuff and new stuff. In rotation I have the following

- Midnight Scorcher
- Scorcher NPT
- Red Sorcerer
- Charcoal Executioner
- Rubber Ball for Spares

New(er) Stuff

- All four ogres
- Gladiator Solid
- Immortal Solid and Pearl

It all depends on what I stick in the bag that night and what shift I bowl on. Old and new stuff works fine for league for me...

Man, where are you finding enough oil to toss a Midnight Scorcher on a house shot? I had one of those things, and it wanted to grab and burn before it left my hand!
