Vise IT's
« on: November 22, 2008, 12:59:35 AM »
I got a new ball with this put in and had 2 different size slugs made, so I had the proshop plug and redrill my 2 other balls with this put in. I picked them up and when I got home, I thought I better check the sluggs in both balls. Well in one ball the sluggs wont lock into place and sit lower in the ball. In the other ball sluggs lock into place, but sit higher than the ball. I love my new ball, but I don't know what to do about the others.

Go back to the proshop and they will fix it.

Re-do the inner or whatever problem you are having.  Check them before you leave the pro shop in all balls to make sure they fit correctly.

This is the only problem with any of the interchangeable thumb systems. It is mandatory that the pro shop guy fits the new outer sleeve to your inner slug to ensure they sit flush with the top of the ball.

Always check before you leave..

Once we got the installation method figured out, my ball driller and I have had no problems whatsoever getting the same fit on every ball.  Where's Gene (raiderh20boy)?  I'm sure he can help explain how to get it installed properly.

One thing I forgot.....using a depth stop ion the drill bit is about the best way to make sure you get consistent sleeve depth. Using the depth gauge on the drill press is not always accurate since do get variations in size from ball to ball not to mention that you may not always get the bit into the chuck the same each time.

True but I've already run into this with one driller if you sharpen over sized bit that you use that will throw off your depth.  Need to recalibrate depth stop...an issue some forget.

Gene was in Denver.. WE WON!!!!!!
Now to the question. If your pro shop had the kit from Exactacator the drill bit(s) that came with the kit had a set collette all ready on it to get the same depth on every ball for the "ball it" installation. The ones that I have are all set to 3 7/16" deep.
If your pro shop didn't get the kit, as you have found out, he better at least set the stop on the spindel of his drill press to only go so deep with the bit. All of my drill bits have the shank cut to 1 1/8 long and all are the same
total length so even when changing for a new sharp bit the drilling would still be the same depth.
As far as one not locking I'm stumped!!!! Incorrect installation?? The slug has to twist into the "ball it".

Not quite positive what your experience is with the slug not locking, but make sure to vaccuum the hole once in a while. On the first few balls I did, I noticed there is a little bit of dust or grains of ball filler that kinda end up in the IT at the bottom of the hole. This was preventing one of my balls from "clicking" into the lock position. It would kinda just "slide" into the lock position. Vacuuming the hole remedied this problem. If you are unable to even get the slug to screw in, it's possible the IT is not centered in the bottom of the hole. This can happen if a lot of vibration occurs and the table shifts slightly before drilling the 1/2" hole. And then once the sleeve is installed, the slug may not line up with the IT, therefore preventing it from even getting into the threading.
