I received my monthly Golf Digest last night a was shocked (not surprised) by an article that is published in it. On page 86 written by David Owen was an article named “Getting in the gutter during golf’s off season.”

Owen tells how he and some of his golfing buddies decided to go to the local bowling centre and try their hand at the game during the off season. He talked about ordering a plastic ball but then order another one with “more spin” and how they even made shoes for both right and left-handed people.

Then came the put-downs. He talked about when one walks into the centre how they feel like athletes compared to the locals. How the regulars gave them dirty looks for having a good time. Then he slammed the bowlers by comparing theirs body shapes to the pins (both have low centers of gravity). He slammed the food and how everything smelled like smoke. There were other put-downs but I’ll let you all read the article.

I read on this site how bowling doesn’t get the respect it deserves and how much of a “sport” this is. As you will clearly see when you read the article there are a lot of others out there that don’t think the same way. He they are putting their views out to millions of readers.

Oh, Owen also gave his e-mail address for any comments:

owen@golfdigest.com

Let’s all drop him a line.

Robert

I went to their web site and he is listed there by his articles. Since this is a new one it isn't listed yet. It looks like it might be lagging two months behind on the site.

You cats crack me up.   Do you really think that it's going to change things?  By getting all bent out of shape about it and sending him e-mails, you are only showing that you can't take a joke.

There isn't anything wrong with laughing at bowlers image.  I laughed so hard at the ABC looking at other bowlers.  It was funny to see all those guys wearing Nicanor Robo Braces, guys wearing shirts 9 years old that were two sizes small for them with bad haircuts.

Hey, the PBA even allows Miller Beer to poke fun at bowlers with their commercials during the show.  Don't they show some fat guys drinking beer???

You guys need to take a chill pill and laugh with this guy.

Yep, I'm laughing....but only at those that take offense to someone having a good time making fun of bowling.

It feels good sometimes to get bent out of shape.

Besides, I can take a joke but I thought this was over the line and from a golf writer!

Well everyone here is Mr. Owen's reply to the e-mail I sent him:

Mr. Berry:  Since I proudly consider myself both a bowler and a golfer, I was teasing myself as well -- as I have often teased golfers.  I once described golf as the only sport in which a competitor will pause halfway through an important match to eat a hotdog, and I have described myself and my fellow golfers as tubby middle-aged men wearing shorts and saddle shoes and driving around in miniature electric cars.  Golfers kind of enjoy laughing at themselves.  Maybe bowlers don't.  But I am definitely looking forward to bowling again this weekend, on both Saturday and Sunday.  David Owen.
