Once Again, PBA On ESPN Delayed
« on: April 05, 2015, 02:36:14 PM »
Was supposed to have started at 1230pm AZ time, but tennis is running late, and may be 30 minutes late at the rate they are playing.  Just a reminder for anyone who set their DVR.

Would have never happened in the '70's on ABC when Anthony and Salvino were regulars in the finals..

Yeah, actually stuff like that DID happen back then just as it does now...and not just the delays like with the bomb threat for the Firestone.  OK, so Firestone was 1991, but still...delays occur for any number of reason.  And sometimes it means televised coverage may not begin on the precise moment it was listed as in the TV Guide...

I want to say that there were a few tiebreakers happening in the finals on some of the ABC shows that delayed the next show afterwards.. Want to say it was ABC's Wide World of Sports, which was hugely popular back then.

Hell, it even delayed Nebraska Cornhuskers Football back when I was growing up in Omaha, and we know how much of a religion college football is to NE, let alone the Midwest!

No actually it didn't to any great extent I remember.  It's simple.  Bowling takes a back seat and it is for lack of respect, not normal progràmming.

Face it....more interest in the big 3 sports plus golf and a lot of sponsorship money tied to it.  Bowling is 2nd rate, along with tennis, and other ho-hum sports.  Not much interest, not a lot of $$.  I think the networks realize this. ::)

I'd call B.S. on this.  No way.

One thing you'll find about this forum brickstone, is there is a lot BS getting shoveled around.  And then if some guys don't like what you post, they send you personal messages calling you this and that.  If you dare put up a fight, all hell breaks loose.

Some of you guys really need to stand back and look at reality. ESPN doesn't cut-off any sport. It doesn't matter what is on after it. Tennis matches run long, and they delay the start of a NASCAR race, or move it to another network in the family. NASCAR races run long and MLS Soccer games start on another channel. It happens all the time. It has nothing to do with bowling. It is ESPN's mantra (for lack of a better word, and a lack of knowing that it is true corporate policy) that they follow an event until the end. If it is a live event, like the drag racing was last week, and whatever it was that delayed the bowling this week (I didn't see the beginning of the show anyway) was a live event. For every bowling fan that posts here, there are probably 1 or maybe 2 fans of the sport that is on at the time. Why are you, as a bowling fan, more important then those fans? The bowling wasn't cut short, you still saw the entire program beginning to end. If they cut part of the program out because of it, then you would have something to complain about.

And for those that are too young, or too stupid to remember. There were many times that the bowling on ABC started late when college football season was going on as some games ran late. It happened and it happens.

You really need to pay more attention then to what happens on a LOT of events...and like I said in an earlier post, it even happened with the NBA broadcast YESTERDAY- Houston and Oklahoma City ran over the scheduled slot and so the Chicago at Cleveland game was joined in progress somewhere close to halfway through the first quarter.

And on more than one occasion, I have events that shift to a different ESPN channel (I have something like eight of them in the listings not even counting LHN and SEC) or that shift to a different FOX channel (something like four of them not counting the regionals).

It happened back in the day (yes, some of us ARE old enough to remember broadcasts in the days before 250 channels of crap) and it will continue to happen as long as efforts are made to broadcast live events.  It is fundamentally no different than having to watch a split-screen for an NBA Finals game because the helicopters were following a white Bronco...

And some of us, even with cable back then, didn't have the ability to watch a split screen, because that entire game of the NBA series was pre-empted by that chase. They lost viewers in the millions because of that chase.

But yes, even Schenkel and Burton were delayed when the tour was on ABC, and ABC even did their own share of delaying themselves, and this was back when bowling was huge.

I don't know what planet you live on, but Chicago vs Cleveland was shown from the opening tip where I live, and I'm not in either market.  Why because local network affiliates have the choice to make that decision.  Chicago vs Cleveland a more attractive game.

Maybe you shouldn't B.S. and expect everyone to believe you.

Funny...I got to see the end of a pretty good HOU/OKC game even if the last few minutes were as ugly as the last few of the third quarter, with OKC employing the Hack-a-Dorsey and Hack-a-Howard to make Houston try to win it at the line and continue getting stops at the other end.  Far better game anyhow...especially since I got in early and had Houston GETTING two points.

But your own comment confirms that there are going to be instances where someone will not get to see the beginning of a program on the slotted channel and time.

Enjoy your crow...

That only happens when the next event is also live, such as a NASCAR race, or MLS match where they can't delay the start for very long. The bowling isn't live, as far as I know, but I'm not sure. Either way, they showed the entire bowling event from start to finish, so it didn't matter that they didn't move it to another network. And if they do this, usually it's ESPNews that gets it, as ESPN2 usually has it's own programming on.

I don't see the big deal about this....when you set-up a recording, do you not look at the program on before it? Even if you set-up a series recording, would you not look a day or two before hand to see what is preceeding it since it is on a network that shows live sports? It seems like a no-brainer to do that and then adjust recording time accordingly. I don't see the need to b!#$h and complain about it week in and week out.

As noted, live coverage of any scheduled event often flips to ESPNNews or one of the alternates...I'm not sure if ESPN Classic still airs or not but in addition to LHN and SEC and the four alternates in the DISH line-up, I also had ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN Classic and ESPN News in addition to ESPN.  All of those have been used at different times for the alternate viewings of live events when something ran over...

The crow is yours to eat, Mr or Mrs Michelle.

You inferred the entire country had to watch the end of OKC vs Houston, and joining the Chi vs Cleve in progress.  That was not the case in my area, and I'm guessing not for the majority of the country.

I'm guessing you live in Oklahoma or Texas, because that game compared to Chicago vs LeBron.  No comparison in ratings.  Nobody cares about OKC especially with Durant out.
