Title: One Ball For League?
Post by: Rival on May 28, 2008, 01:40:26 PM
I was wondering, how many of you guys throw the same ball from frame one of game one, to frame ten of game three?  My friends got into a little arguement (one accusing the other that buying 25 balls a year is ridiculous), and they decided to place a little wager on the summer league since it really isn't that important.  I jumped in for the hell of it.  We must bring one ball the entire summer season, and a spare ball.  Whoever has the most pins at the end of the league wins.

So to conclude everything... which of you bring one ball to league?  And which of you bring two bags?  I'm hoping this gives me time to fine tune my adjustments, and hopefully come out next winter with a bang.  Thoughts?

I only use one ball, Absolute Inferno.  I don't use a spare ball either.  Although I would have thrown my Radical Inferno tonight had it been drilled as the pro shop told me but that's life and I shot 669 (first league series in about 2 1/2 years)

I bring one 2 ball tote bag. Inside an Absolute Inferno and a Dr. Jekyll. No need to bring anything else because the lanes i bowl at are either bone dry which is where the Dr. Jekyll comes in handy or they are medium for the Absolute Inferno.

I've had plenty of weeks that I've kept one ball for three games.  Depends a lot on who else is on the pair.  Get the geezers throwing 80-grit rocks up the 10-board all night and you'll want to switch balls before the end of the first game.

I try to choose the right ball first, and I certainly don't mind moving around, but sometimes if the "carry" just isn't there I will try another ball.

90% of the time I can stick with one ball all night on a regular house shot.  (Especially now that I punched up a Cell -- I still haven't seen a condition that ball doesn't like with the layout I put on it)  On a tougher shot or a PBA Experience league, I may have to change balls more frequently.

I only bring one + spare to leagues. Then again it's only fairly easy house shot.

It depends on the house. If I know what to expect, I either go with my Frankie MAy Gryphon at 2.000 Arbalon on oilier shots, or my polished Revolution Renegade on medium to medium-dry shots. Plus spare - I play so slow that I cannot make the right corner well with a reactive piece.

The Renegade is also the better option if I have to play more than 4 games - I then start with an outside line and move deeper as the lane opens up in the course of playing.

IMHO, if you are limited to one ball, I'd suggest rather going with a weaker piece. On a normal THS, even if it is oily, you find enough room and grip e. g. with a medium RG/med. diff. polished ball close to the gutter to make the ball work, but you still have the full ball potential when the lanes dries up or the shot is lighter than usual. I found strong balls not to be very effective, because they make reading the lane quite difficult (esp. on THS) and rather create issues with overpowering the ball after somke time than keeping up a steady game. Less is more, and even though a straight outside shot to the pocket does not look spectacular, but keeps you out of trouble most of the time when it counts, or until the lane opens up on tighter conditions

For league, 2 balls. An Inferno and a spare ball. Thats all I need even with the transition.

I usally only use 2 for a regular league night.  Start with my Twisted Fury and when it dries out I go to my Total NV polished for the extra length.

As long as THS is consistent, there's not really a need for more than 2 balls. I don't use a plastic, so generally its the original inferno and fire quantum.. Unfortunately the lane man at the local center likes to have fun sometimes and use the old lane machine, which is a flood from gutter to gutter. So anything short of sand paper won't wrinkle. It's for this reason I usually bring at least 3 balls, knowing full well i won't touch anything stronger than the Inferno but one night a week.

Fortunately for me, there's a serious summer league that pays $1k a man for first place, so i can't afford to be unprepared for the lane mans tricks.

I own a CELL and a SPARE TIRE.

Of course I only bowl at about 3 dfferent houses on a regular basis. And I did have to do a surface change to the CELL now that the weather has warmed up.

Still no plans to buy another ball yet.

On A regular House shot if you forced me to use one ball out of the seven that I own, no doubt in my mind, the Action Attack. I choose it over the Nsane, BWP,
TF,TI. It's got the best carry in any of the three houses I bowl in.

I recently retired my old school 5 ball arsenal for a brand new 3 ball arsenal:

T-Road Solid - Heavy to medium
T-Road Pearl - Medium to medium dry
Brunswick Groove Urethane - Dry & Spare ball

With either arsenal I only use one ball the whole night. During practice I'll throw all the equipment on each lane to get an idea of how the lanes are. Once league starts I stick with one ball the whole night, with the exception of going to my spare ball on spares.

I'm more comfortable making adjustments with my feet, hands, release, and the like using the same ball instead of changing to another ball and throwing the same line.

my arsenal is in my profile and right now I use the MAchine at one center from game 1 to game 4 without changing (4 vs 4)
the H2O is better on the other...

Most of the time in a THS league in most centers, I can stay with the same ball for all 3 games.  There is 1 center where the lanes break down so fast that a second ball is sometimes necessary for carry purposes.  But most of the time I only need 1.
