Lane conditions...
« on: April 13, 2004, 11:45:26 PM »
Last night I was throwing my Reloaded. During the first few games the ball was sliding longer and at the last second it had a nice backend snap. As the night progressed, the ball would start hooking earlier and earlier. I decided to move to the left a few boards and the ball was hooking nicely into the pocket again. Why did that happen? Also, I want to thank everyone who participates in this forum for answering my questions. Believe it or not I have become a better bowler by listening to given advice. I didn't realize how technical bowling really is.

That happened because your ball was taking down the oil on your line to the backend, meaning it will roll where the oil has been taken up and where the oil is on the backends (carrydown) it will move less and have less energy, as it began to roll earlier. Changing your line means you go back to staying in the oil and therefore starting to roll at the same point as when there was no carrydown and be just as strong in the backends as it was.

Hope I helped...

Modern bowling balls act as sponges.  Your ball was sucking up the oil in the heads.  Your adjustment found more oil in the heads, allowing the ball to get to the breakpoint at the right place.  The carrydown StormStriker mentioned  usually happens later in the set.  Some of the oil from where the flare lines cross (the bowtie) will be deposited far down the lane.  Carrydown will impede the ball from making it's snap until it's too late.  The usual result is a washout or a 2-10.
