One of those nites
« on: May 31, 2003, 07:00:01 PM »
Looks like my trip to NC is starting to pay dividends.  Anyone serious about the game should make plans to visit Ron Clifton.

For those of you who think I’m bragging, you’re right.  At my age, don’t know how many more chances I’m going to get.

I shot a team tournament last nite, real old house, above ground ball returns, pure wood lanes, gutter to gutter oil.

Games went exactly like this.

Game 1:  front 9, 4 pin, 10 pin
Game 2:  front 9, 8 pin, 7 pin
Game 3:  1st 4, 4-7 (missed) sheet

278 – 278- 264 for 820

The missed spare of course cost me a good triplicate, also cost me the house record, missed by 2 pins.

Gloating over until next time.

PS Barb, you’re one behind now, get your act in gear.

Congrats Darold, nice shooting!  BTW, it's funny, but I now have more difficulty with left side spares like the 4-7 than with the 10 pin.  Have to learn to throw it straight, I guess.

Can you tell us what's different about the way you bowl now, compared to before your visit to Mr. Carpet?  Inquiring minds want to know.

Seadrive, Ron's approach to coaching is unique.  In my case, after watching the video he noticed I was falling off the shot right slightly.  Now I had always been taught to keep everything in a straight line.  He recommended I turn my sliding foot slightly to create a 3 point stance for better balance.

Ron's approach is just fix the things that have an impact on your game, those things that enhance consistency.  You can be doing 10 things wrong but if they add up to you releasing the ball correctly, consistently, why fix it.

Fantastic Darold!  First CoachJim, now you.  Looks like the rest of us slackers that went to NC need to get our rears in gear.

It's them SAWS!  Which one did you use?  I plugged and drilled my Viper I traded for last night (finally), and was really impressed.  Good roll with a strong midlane, but the key for me is there's a strong move without over reaction on the backend.  It just doesn't take off when it hits the dry.

SrKegler, you can't argue with success, and 820 in a brickyard sounds like success to me!  I mean, you even had the old above ground ball returns to contend with!  Of course, you weren't shooting many 10-pins, so the returns didn't present nearly as much of a problem as they normally would.  For those who have never kicked an above ground ball return, they don't know what they are missing, and it is really a feat that is not enjoyable.  Shooting a 10-pin spare from the right side of an above ground ball return is a guaranteed kick.

As we both know, the youngsters today who have never seen such conditions don't know what they are missing out on.

Lol, I bowl at a house with ball return capping.  I'm glad they oil the lanes, cause it's IMPOSSIBLE to bowl deeper than 4th arrow on the right lane, unless you want to slide on the half foot high capping, it's great!  I've kicked it twice more times than I care to remember.  Kicking it on my swing foot nearly throws my shot off, so I give it another good kick after the shot just cause it's irritating!

Yeah, that will teach it a lesson it wont soon forget!

I've bowled in some houses where on the first lane, the wall is right next to the left gutter and have seen some good holes in the wall from people kicking it.

Jaybowl in Lawrence (home of the Jayhawks bowling team) is like that, there's a wall just right there on the left of lane 1.  Bowled a tourney there, and it's really fun!  There are two lanes like that though, there are supports that divide the house in half, and lane 7 has a big concrete wall right next to it also.  It's crazy!

The closest wall I remember was the one at State Fair Lanes in Detroit.  I used to bang my left arm on the stupid wall when shooting at the ten pin.  There were some others in the Detroit area that I used to hit (er, bowl at) while competing in travel leagues that had a wall close to the lanes but I cant remember which they were now, except for State Fair.

To get back to the topic, nice bowling SrKegler.

Lol, yeah, awesome!  It's hard to throw your shot when you're trying to keep your free arm or leg from banging into the wall every shot.

Look forward to seeing your name posted as winner of a few ABT tournaments!

Good luck at the Hoinke.

SrKegler,
Don't blame that sorry bowling on me. You chopped a 4-7?
I also want to know where you get off calling yourself SENIOR Kegler. You are a very young man in an ol'guys suit. I know lots of 35 year olds I wish were young as you.
That was some great bowing my friend. An achievement of a life time that 99% of all bowlers will never see.
Keep it up!
