bowling balls and hook
« on: June 23, 2005, 02:30:46 AM »
i cant help but to comment on the recent craze for the epoxy bowling balls.  do we really need more hook?   i cant tell you the last time i used a particle ball besides the pba regionals and the abc.  then i only used my impulze zone highly polished for one or two games.  do people not have any hand at all or do they see an extreme amount of oil.  maybe im bowling in the wrong part of the country.  i use a label monster brusier around town and that still hooks a little much.  im just curious of what others think about needing more hook.  i remember being in junior leagues and throwing track stuff and all the new stuff was particle.  i dont know about the desert heat yet but i had a dry heat and that hooked a ton with a label drill.  tracks not the only ocmpay likes this but at least columbia, storm, ebonite, brunswick at least have something tame.   the pwoer groove still hooked quite a bit for me so im still in search of an older brunswick ball with little hook.  so what do you think?

I've seen more craze for the new Brunswick and Track releases.  Just because the epoxy ball could be made to hook the lane, that doesn't mean that it will.  Why don't we wait until it's released before we condemn it?

im just trying to find out every new particle ball people drool over  out of the 175 bowling balls in my 6 bowling career  maybe 12 have been particle.  i see it all the time with people saying the new track or columbia particl are going to hook a ton i cant wait.    even on some slicker patterns i cant even use particle granted i do have a little more that average hand   even people with a ton of hand love it  i dont see the need for a ton of hooking stuff i look more the stuff that doesnt hook    mid price to low end

bob hanson pretty much summed it up for me as well. i'm looking for ball reaction. i'm a straighter player and if i can't get the ball to come up to the pocket i'm going to use a ball that will help me achieve that. on the other hand if the lanes are that dry i'm going to use something that has much greater length.

No one here has seen the Epoxy in action (99%) and have no more clue than just speculation on its reaction. Why the big hypothetical on how much its gonna hook? I remember Accyrillium was toughted as the same thing and how did that fair in the market?? Particles now are much smaller and less loading then when first released. Did Particles hook total boards more for me, no, probably less, but i could manipulate where they would start their break for an easier to control reaction on oil.

Particle Balls serve two purposes:

1.  They help the weak handed to get control of the mid-lane when their game sees too much oil.

2.  For players like me who tend to get too much "over/under" on today's house shots, they give me a smoother reaction to the walled up conditions.

In my proshop, most customers are looking for hook.  Most of them don't have a lot of hand; many of them have poor to only modest technique.  Whenever I suggest that they modify their game, I get blank stares.  Particle balls help to bring more players into the game, who previously felt that they couldn't compete.

Try and bowl on a sport league sometime and you will probably see a 50+ foot pattern. You will be begging for something strong (although you really just need to get comfortable playing straighter).

When people think about this upcoming epoxy equipment they automatically think more hook. One of the most important comments I heard about it when it was first brought up is that it is supposed to roll the same or very consistant with a ton of oil or looser patterns.

Anyone else heard this?

On a side note, a sport shot doesn't mean anything with regard to oil volume or length, just a 2 to 1 ratio side to side.  There are just as many dry sport shots as oily ones.  People complain about the drier ones because the middles hook early and hard, and the wet ones because they lose their swing room.  Even a non sport shot with 15-20 units outside plays like a flood to people accustomed to hard walls.  The center I see most often now still uses a house shot, but the outsides are a little slicker than most.  You'd be surprised how many gutters you see.

Excalibur: I also heard that the epoxy ball was supposed to be very consistent - almost taking the lane pattern out of play.  It will be interesting to see if that is the case.

I don't know but I can tell you that my favorite ball is a Columbia Throttle Up which is not made anymore. Great particle ball with an arc that is stunning. That is definitely a ball the you would like. Try ebay because that ball is awesome. No big hook here just a classic arc to it.
