Can polish kill a ball?
« on: March 07, 2004, 03:02:07 AM »
I have an inferno which I love. Best ball I ever owned. I was bored the other day and gave it a good cleaning, which I followed with 1000 sque3aky clean ball polish. Now I have no control on the ball at all, and the hit seems to be about half of what it was before. Is it the polish or have I just entered the "SLUMP"?

If it is the polish do I have to have the ball sanded now to take the polish off or will another good deep cleening get rid of it?

Since Sqeaky Clean polishes have been off the market for 3+ years, my best guess is that you did not really put a "true" polish on the ball. My Squeaky Clean bottles

(I have 1000, 2000 and 300 grit; some parts of it pecipitate out and form a HARD solid at the bottom. I have to break it up with a long bladed screwdriver, then mix it by shaking very firmly for 10 minutes PLUS.)

need an intense mixing (I use that word, intense, quite advisedly) to mix the component parts into a real polish. I am not sure what you have actually applied.

May I sincerely suggest that you sand it to at least 600, very thoroughly, then re-apply a more recently mixed polish (of almost anyone's brand, but a bowling ball-specific polish), and a light coat at that. THEN test it in practice. The sanding should hopefully remove whatever parts of the Sqeaky Clean mixture was left in the old jar and whatever you applied.

You cannot "remove" a polish, because there should be NO polish left on a ball after polishing. The gloss you see has nothing to do with a substance being left on the ball, but inside the micro-sanding of the micro-stratches in a balls surface. So "deep cleaning" doesn't remove polish, because there is nothing to remove. Polish is NOT a wax.

That said, Charlest is mostly correct, there may not have been much solid abrasive in the compound you used, so you may have been using mostly the solution in which the abrasive sits in. Simply scruff the ball and try with a newer polish. Also, how are you applying the polish? By hand or with a spinner. If by hand, I hope you are not simply waxing on/ waxing off. Proper polishing by hand will take roughly an hour or so, much longer if you are as anal as me and want all surfaces to have the same sheen.

As far as the baking question, did you bake until the ball would sit for 15 minutes in at least 150 degrees, with out any oil coming out of it?

Yes, if you polish a ball, it's supposed to decrease the overall hook potential of a ball.  It will increase length and increase backend for a relatively short period of time, unless you REALLY polish the stuff out of it.  Did you REALLY polish the stuff out of it?  It's always a good idea to sand it or scotch brite it before polishing to give you a fresh surface to work with.  If it was polished beforehand, and you polished it again, of course it's gonna kill it.  Brunswick pearls have always been touchy for me though, polish really diminishes the reaction.

Sand it to 800 grit, then apply Brunswick's High Gloss Polish.  That would be the out of box condition.

Thanks guys for all the help. Yeah I really polished the stuff out of it. lol. Polished for about an hour and half.

Yeah, I'm sure the polish is good, I have no hard stuff at the bottom of the container and I always shake the he11 out of it before I use it, I have polished it before and never got results like today, but I did not have it sanded before hand so maybe that's why.

I will definitely have it sanded down, probably to 600 like I did before, and have a light polish of some sort added to it to make it purdy again. lol

The house I bowl at changed how they oil the lanes. I just found this out. One of the things I enjoyed about my league was the fact that they put a different shot down every week, now they have switched to doing the THS. Being a lefty I thought I would tear them up on a THS from what everyone says, but I cant find the pocket to save my azz now. lol. Anyway, I'll sand her down and see if that was the problem. Thanks again guys for the help.

Huh???  You polished the ball for "AN HOUR AND A HALF!?!?!?!"  Geez man...were you that bored or something?  Polishing a ball on a spinner shouldn't take anyone more than a couple of minutes tops!!

Yeah, lol.  Still, an hour and a half is a long time by hand.
