Title: Only one ball can be used on the PBA telecast!
Post by: charlest on July 28, 2003, 06:41:05 PM
I just read a bowling article by a man named Dick Evans, in a local bowling newspaper, called The SPorts Reporter. It's published in Seacaucus, NJ and covers East coast "sports"; all bowlingthat I can see. I suspect Dick Evans is a national reporter; the byline is Las Vegas, NV; his contact email is Evans121@aol.com. The article is about the PBA abd Steve Miller, President and CEO of the PBA.

One of the possibilities for the future that Miller indicated, as part of the interview is this:

"Sometime in the future, some bowling ball company may decide to become a $4 or $5 million umbrella sponsor of the entire tour and then only that bowlingball will be allowed to be used on the ESPN telecast."

Another possibility is :
"Miller will allow women to bowl in PBA events next season."

One Ball?!? That would suck if that ever happened. As much as I love Track stuff I would hate to see an all Track telecast. Its interesting to see all of the different equipment out there and how it reacts with different people throwing.

As for the women on the men's tour. I would love to see that, imagine Michelle Feldman winning the TOC next year or something like that!!

How am I supposed to knock all 10 down with one ball?!?

Similar article in August BJ.  No reference to only one ball on telecast.  More likely would be something like The PBA Tour brought to you by _______.  Or here in Chicago, Chicago Bears football brought to you by Bank One.

The PBA has already alienated the ball companies enough with the exorbitant registration fees.  Without the support of the ball companies, the PBA and PWBA would have died years ago.

See the article on the BJ website.

It would be to bad if it were the Track open
and for that tournament you had to use track balls.
Then the next tournament was the visionary TOC
and evreyone had to use visionary.  On a per tournament basis
I think it would be fine, each company that is sposoring the tour
gets their own tournament in which everyone has to use their equipment
for that tournament.  I think it would really test the pros ability to pick equipment, because they would have to pick different equipment, from different manufactures.

As far as females bowling on the PBA....

Last time I checked PBA stood for Professional Bowlers Association I didn't see Male in there.

I'm still holding out for what I think would be one of the greatest matches ever:

Tish Johnson Vs. PDW

balanced, of course, by the opening match of Liz and Norm playing up the boards from waaaaaay outside

That could really make it tough on the PRO'S. Bowler uses a particular ball to qualify then has to switch to the sponsors ball to bowl TV! The only thing that would make sense is .. every qualifier would be using the sponsors ball .. wow .. wonder what that would do?

I don't like that idea at all...  Personally, I would like to see each individual pro wearing a shirt in the show of a sponsor that is OUTSIDE of bowling products.  Tide will spend millions to sponsor a racecar, maybe if the PBA could infuse some advertising value to their telecasts then such companies might spend a few thousand (starting small here!) to sponsor a touring pro.

Can I mention one thing here that I've noticed?  Bowling doesn't aggressively go after their customers - professional or otherwise.  The marketing just isn't there.  If I want to watch the pros on TV, I have to SEARCH for when they're on.  Any other sports event I already know when it is because I've read about it, heard it on the radio, and saw an ad for it on TV.  Professional bowling, if it is to survive, needs a marketing dept. that can take their product to the consumer and generate interest in the telecasts.  Then, once people are watching, the show will have to get the people to become fans, and market their pros - make people want to root for and against them.  Then, hopefully, corporations would see value in placing their name on Pete's shirt - because he'd have a bunch of rabid fans who'd buy the product because they support Pete.  A La NASCAR.  They may be a bunch of rednecks driving in circles, but the marketing gurus are laughing all the way to the bank.  Maybe bowling could take some notes from that success.
