Handicap jackpots/brackets
« on: December 20, 2010, 05:27:57 AM »
Handicap jackpots/brackets.I know a lot of bowlers that don't
get in.And bowlers on this site and others that refuse to get
in.They refuse on the basis, of not having a chance to compete
with a bowler that shoots a 256 then gets 64 pins, like a guy on one
of my leagues did this week. But it doesn't stop me.It just makes
me compete that much harder. And bowlers shooting way
over average is just part of the game.
What are your thoughts.

our centers run both scratch and handicap brackets and doubles. I will not get in the handicap for obvious reasons as you just said...but I am always in the scratch stuff----100% of the time.

I used to go into the pots every week but don't anymore. The reason being is that I'm a very consistant bowler. I rarely throw gems or stinkers. I cannot compete with the lower average bowlers who can "catch on fire" every now and then. I'm also in the area where I'm not good enough to compete with the scratch bowlers. I rather save my money.

We do handicap brackets as well, but only at 70% of the player's average to make it a little more tolerable for all.

What I fail to understand is do you view brackets as gambling as:

a) gambling - a chance to compete in a mini tournament
b) investment - Might make a profit/might break even/might lose
c) guaranteed income

In HDCP - there is no way I can think of for the "same" bowler to shoot 256 and continue to get 64 pins each week.  The following week his average has to increase and his HDCP has to decrease.

I run HDCP brackets (and scratch) on my weekly league.  Now, 3 weeks ago, 1 bowler shoots 720 off his 185 average and sweeps the 5 HDCP brackets that night.  Yep, that night, he was pretty much unbeatable. And you know what.  In the 3 weeks since, then, he has entered every HDCP bracket, and lost.

I think a lot of bowlers view brackets as option C above instead of option A & B which is their right.  But over the long haul of a season, instead of one night, it balances out.

I see them as an investment in the long run. In the short run I try to think of it as gaurenteed money. When it comes to HDCP brackets it depends on what the HDCP is based out of. I dont get mad or frustrated when 1 week every 10 or 15 weeks that a 185 avg bowler shoots 660+. I give him credit for shooting that. Thats no different than thats no difference than a scratch 225 avg bowler shooting 770+ which happpens. You just suck it up for that one week you get beat and continue to either get in them or dont. I cant see the point of getting in a few one week and none then next, then  get in them all another time like I see around here from time to time.

I get in pots and brackets, both scratch and handicap. I do think the handicap shouldn't take to score over 300 - because should you shoot 300 you shouldn't lose to a 328!!

But basically, it is gambling and no one will win all the time. No one says anything when the handicappers put their money in the pot for 16-17 weeks and wins nothing. But the day they luck up and bowl that 250 plus 48 sticks, Man does the complaining start. If you don't like it, don't get in. But some people complain all day, and NEVER get in anything.

In one of my leagues that is the way it is. In the pots no one can get more than 300 in in doubles a person can't get more that 300.

Bowling is like life. Sometimes you are the ball. Other times you are the pins.
