What makes a team really click?
« on: March 19, 2005, 12:42:18 PM »
We shot women's city tournament team event today. One of our tournament team mates couldn't make it - had to go out of town, so we bowled the 4 woman team event.
We shot 975 the first game, 915 the second, 820 () the third, for a scratch total of 2710. Add in our measly (compared to other teams) 210 pins handicap, and we shot 2920.

We not only took over first place by 294 pins, but were 5 pins behind the leading 5 WOMAN team.

What makes teams click? It wasn't one bowler, it was 3 of the 4 of us - 680-699-752...

I was asked by several of the spectators who put the team together (me), and why we bowled so well together...

I told 'em it was because we all love the competition - there are no hot heads on the team, and no head trips, petty arguments, grudges, and stuff like that.

Thoughts?

For me it is being able to be relaxed with everyone. If you can joke around and have fun then it is easier to bowl better. Bowling with good bowlers also helps out a lot.

My team has been together for 3 years and we started as a rag-tag bunch.  We really struggled the first two seasons, but this year our averages are all up.  We all get along great and have fun... I think that is a huge part of it.  We feel relaxed in eachothers' company and we are positive and encourage eachother whether we are bowling well or bowling poorly.  We definitely DON'T get down on eachother if someone is struggling.

I strongly believe the key to our success this season (78-34 W-L to date) is that we strung a few successful weeks together early in the season, and since then we have a high confidence level that we can be tough to beat no matter who we bowl.

Current lineup is like this:
185 avg.
166
193
205 (me)
215

My average is up 5 pins in the last 6 weeks this late in the season.  About the same with the 193 guy, too.  Basically, it seems like if one person struggles, the other 4 bowl well and pick him up.  Not sure what the answer to the burning question is though.

This is kind of funny, I think this is the problem with my team.  We won our conference this year and bowled don't get me wrong but...some guys just don't get along. When the conference tourney and State came around we sucked plain and simple, and there is no communication. You'll see other teams yelling getting pumped about a teamate stringing together a 5 bagger but we are quiet, we give each others high fives and that's about it. I sure hope our coach cuts some of the no team players next year and keeps a few men shorter (we had a team of 16 this year!) and only 9 bowl at a time. (5 varsity, 4 JV) That's a lot of sitting when you're not a varsity starter. Like they say some teams are stronger or have more accuracy but no one has the measured edge on chemistry and desire, and that's what you really need to win.

I have been around the game a few years and way back in the 83-84 season we threw a 3569 set. The low man was a guy who could have given us a BIG set. He only shot 610 or less. We just fed off each other and as they say, there is no I in team. I just shot my local state tournament and got to watch younger guys shoot a new state record scratch total. No handicap for them.

I think bowlers feed off each other and try that much harder and with todays scores who knows where the scores will go...

I think it's a combination of respect, confidence in the abilities of the bowlers, a subtle way of helping each other out if completely lost and you genuinely have to like the people that you bowl with. I've bowled on college teams where there are one or two hotheads and they can really bring a team down quickly- and I've bowled on teams where everyone is socialable and knows what to do on the lanes- and usually the latter puts our team higher in the standings for tournaments and can bring home some money.
