looking to get back into using grips
« on: July 23, 2012, 10:43:05 AM »
Recently I've been taking lessons and my coach has been working on me relaxing my grip..... a lot! It helps me throw more consistent shots. My equipment is drilled with no grips no bevel to give me a great feel of the ball when i was grabbing the bottom of the swing. With me bowling more this year and really not having a great feel for the ball since the change in my approach I wanted to go with grips to give me the feel of grip without having to grab the ball. Was thinking turbo quad II or vise power lift but havent thrown a ball with grips in over 7 years and am lost when it comes to selecting. I did like the feel of the quad II but wanted to get some input from you guys who do use grips.

I think it's totally a personal preference.  I use Vise ovals, and pitch my finger holes according to what I want as far as feel.  Currently I'm 1/8 reverse on middle (some joint pain from arthritis), and 0 on the ring.  Everyone is different, and some tour players use grips (TJ, Malott, Barnes) and others do not (Rash, Bohn, Duke)

My concern is that you said you had a "great feel of the ball" without grips and now that you have changed your approach and relaxed your hand, you don't.  I'm not sure new grips will fix your problem.  I know when I was coached to relax my hand, I was still able to feel and grab the ball at the bottom.  What did change was that I had to tighten my thumb hole so I didn't have to grip the ball in my backswing.  By not having to grip the ball I was able to relax my hand and still clear the thumb and grab the ball (for hook) at the bottom.  Might be worth playing around with before changing all your grips.  Good Luck!!

@Russell: thanks for the reply. I do understand that feel is the big factor. Just wanted to know if there was some advantage or better feel from one than the other and/or if anyone used the aforementioned grips. I ask because i feel, (and I've just been thinking about it, havent brought this idea to my coach), with the current set up and me breaking my wrist in the approach, I feel like I'm missing the ball at the bottom of the swing. I dont know maybe I'm being silly.

@Dogtown: i have a tight thumb hole since relaxing my grip. My coach shortened my span and tightened my grip and I guess with the tighter feel has a weird feel. I feel on certain shots the hand exits at the same time instead of thumb then fingers. I wanted to try this in a ball I dont use and practice for a while (a month or so) to decide whether i like it and want to switch. As mentioned to Russell, it's an idea thats been floating around in my head that I've wanted to try. Maybe it works, maybe I'm just being silly.

if you decide to go to grips and decide on the power lifts there is one thing to consider and i hope your ball driller takes this into consideration when drilling your stuff. When you drill to add the inserts you have to go more reverse in your fingers to make up for the pitch in the grip itself caused by the power lifts. for example if you have 3/16th reverse in your fingers and put a power lift insert in you will roughly be at 0. By not doing this can cause some problems with your feel and eventually some pain in your hand.

Thanx for the tip. My driller is on vise staff so im pretty sure if i tell him i want grips he'll take that into consideration. Im more so leaning towards the quad II's though. I like the way they feel in the ball. Going to Jacobus, Pa next week for the pro shop class by innovative so maybe ill get the opportunity to drill them myself.

Your welcome. I would still tell him to remind you because you would be shocked to know how many proshop owners dont know this or even take the time to look into this when drilling for their customers. Just making sure you are getting the most out of your change and have as much information as possible.

I was using no grips for almost 10 years or little under that. Saw the pros on tour not using them and didn't look back. Then eventually, pain in my fingers took over and my fingers were callusing up too much. I tried a new pitch on a new ball going to reverse on the fingers and was disastrous and gave it up weeks later. The good news is I went from 0 in my thumb to 1/8 forward and that part helped my game. Finally just started to use grips and most of my balls I could get it drilled without having to plug. One other big downside to finger tipped drilled is it is good if it works for you for NIB balls and never have to touch them but if you have to plug it or get a used ball and have to drill into the plugging....I never liked the feel of the plug as it's way too slippery.

I first tried at one shop Vise and my local house Turbo. Vise is soft but they seem to shrink really bad after awhile and have to be replaced. Turbo is harder and have had to replace my middle finger grip on two different balls due to the rubber chipping off.

Appreciate the info Brian. I plan on replacing my grip every year or atleast when i notice a difference so shrinkage or chipping shouldnt be a major problem. As you already know, they aren't meant to be in the ball forever. Lol!
