opinions on switching from 16# to 15#
« on: April 18, 2005, 03:38:30 PM »
ok heres my problem...i am thinking of switching from 16 to 15 and i would like some input i am finding myself with the following problems:

Lack of ball speed
inconsistency
getting tired quickly (im getting back into rolling tournaments and i find myself getting tired real fast)

So obviously the pros of switching to 15 would most likely be the following (correct me if im wrong):

-More ball speed
-greater control and consistency
-not getting tired as quick

some cons:

-i just revamped my arsenal and put alot of money into it (including a shock and awe, and ultimate inferno)
-overpowering the ball (which i use to do when i threw 15 before)
-having to redo my arsenal again!

so what do you guys think i have been having alot of trouble getting the ball down the lane due to my lack of ball speed (around 14 mph) would it be worth the investment i would have to make to do this? and also would it be a really bad idea to just add to my arsenal with 15# balls maybe some stuff that would help me get the ball down the lane in addition to my 16# stuff (which i score well with if there is enough oil).
opinions, comments? any questions ask away...

Well it is a tricky situation. If you had unlimited cash, and resources, it would of course be a no-brainer, GO FOR IT. But since you don't, you have asked the question. My questions are: Why do you bowl? I see from your profile that you are a college student, so you have plenty of time to do what you want.
So... Do you bowl in leagues only, or in tournaments also. Do you have aspirations to be a Pro bowler(Regional included.) Or do you bowl primarily for the fun? And will you be content to be only a high average league/local tourney bowler.

Basically my opinion is: If you want to go pro or are in it for money in any way (eventually) GO TO 15! (Or whatever works to get you winning).

If not: Stay with 16 and save your money, it is all for fun and not worth hundreds of dollars.

The choice is up to you, but I would take into account what you plan to do with your game in the future. Yhis should be your #1 concern besides your health. If 16# balls could cause injury... Go to 15#
my .02 Hope this helps. Good luck!

I don't know the answer because I had the same question.  I was wondering if there would be any difference in the hitting power of the ball?

heres some answers to bowlitups questions

No i do not have an unlimited amout of money lol in fact college is making me poor which is why this is such a tough decision

I would one day like to try some regionals....my game needs alot of work but i would like to take any steps possible to become a better bowler, its my main sport and i love to do it...

I beleive the best thing for my game would be switching to 15 lbs...but again i pose this question...would it be bad to mix 15's and 16's in the same arsenal?  Using 15# stuff to help me get the ball down the lane and using 16# stuff when the shot has more oil for me so i dont have to "force" the ball down the lane...how bad would that be?

It sounds good to me. I mean you can only do what your financial situation allows. Eventually, you will have enough cash to convert totally, but just go at the pace you can handle. (And I knew you didn't have unlimited $$$, I was just saying IF you did, it would be an easy decision.)

And don't worry about hitting power. It is just as good as 16 nowadays, from what I have read/heard. I believe that most pro's actually use 15 now, as do I, and I have not had a problem.(correct if wrong)
Good luck guys!
