Thumb Coming out too late?
« on: October 09, 2012, 11:29:16 PM »
Hey all, as the title suggests I'm having some trouble getting my thumb out. But first a little background. I'm 19 years old. When I was 16, I averaged 199. All was well, shot 687 with the Mission just after it came out. That summer, I switched to a different type of thumb slug, but the shape didn't feel right. I went back to my pro shop only to find that the guy that usually did my stuff left to start his own way out of the area. My thumb felt terrible. That winter, I averaged 150. Not only blaming the thumb here, but do think it was a factor. Anyway, every time I got new stuff, the new guy didn't measure me, despite the fact that I was still growing. The original Mission was the last ball I was measured for. Anyway, fast forward 3 years, I went to a guy who came highly recommended by a good friend and right away I felt better. He lengthened my span by about a half inch, as well as taking reverse pitch from 1/9 to 3/8. But I'm still not coming out good. I feel my thumb coming out at the same time as my fingers, if not after. I'm lofting the ball like crazy, and the ball is spinning more so than it is revving. What could it be? My first thought is squeezing, a bad habit I might have developed when my fit wasn't right. I feel it mostly in the base of my thumb. Could it still be the span or pitch? If I am squeezing it bad, what is the fix? Sorry for the long winded post here, just very very frustrated. Thanks in advance guys!

P.S.- I know a video would more than likely come in handy as it usually does. Unfortunately I am without a camera at the moment, so just thought I'd see if I could figure something out while I try to conjure one up.

I had the same problems when the driller I go to and I decided to experiment with my pitches, and the biggest thing that helped me out of it was just practicing more. Once your hand gets used to the different feeling, or at least starts hurting from the gripping, you'll break yourself.

Sounds crude, but eh. I bowled 8 games and that killed my hand, but the 8th game I was coming out a lot cleaner.

But, that's just if you really are squeezing. A little more time might be all you need. Other people with more drilling effect expertise will have more to say than myself.

It sounds like you went from a bad thumb fit to a bad span fitting. Lengthening the span 1/2" is a lot and could be the reason for your issue. Go back to your driller and have him properly fit your hand. He may be an old schooler who still measures to the first joint of the fingers. Thats a no-no in todays game and a recipe for grabbing the ball. That would be why your thumb is not clearing. You're grabbing the ball because the span is making you do so in order to hold on to it. If you stick your hand in the ball and your fingernails beat the back of the holes then your span is too long. Have you had any numbness or finger/ thumb as well?
