Sport shot with flying backends...how to play it?
« on: June 13, 2006, 06:06:26 AM »
I'm going to be bowling in a sport league for the second time tonight.  (I might be taking one of the spots on the team permanently.)  The shot, as far as I could tell, was this:  outside of 10 was pretty well OOB, no bouncing allowed that far out, and the backends were flying.  I was having trouble keeping my Doom on the right side of the rack.  Later in the session, I found some success playing a deeper, tight line.  I will try that again but wondered if there was another kind of line I could try.  I was thinking maybe a shot up the boards outside 5, kind of like how I've seen Norm Duke play some of the PBA patterns.  Any thoughts on this?

Depending on how long the pattern is with the volume of oil placed on the lane surface, you may be able to play outside. Shorter patterns (30'-35') tend to have breakpoints around the 5-7 board, medium patterns (up to 41' feet) have breakpoints usually around second arrow and longer patterns can be around 13-15 board for the breakpoint.

Particle equipment or particle pearls can smooth out strong back ends depending on the layout- I think your Doom may be too skid/snap for most sport shot conditions.

Playing outside you may have to come more up the back of the ball, lower your stance and get the ball on the lane earlier, especially if the out of bounds area doesn't leave much room for error. A clean release and similar ball speed from shot to shot will also help. Good luck and keep us informed of the progress.

Sport shot...flying backends...?  Is there any other type...rare..at least at first!

I have found on all variations of same that if oil up front...cg's out and weightholes on pap smooth everything out.

Always medium low rg to low rg.  And balls that are stacked...almost always banned from my bag!

My best on this have been a Ti Hawk drilled stacked pin near ring and a deep medium sized hole on PAP.  UMMMMMM!

PS Also had a sledghammer that liked WTC...shots...3 3/8 X MB on val weighthole on ....you guessed it!!!  PAP!

Thanks for the replies.  When I say up the boards, I do indeed play straight up the boards.  Even on a house shot my preferred shot is right up the ten board.  I don't have any options as far as different equipment right now, but I will try to play the Doom and the Big One up boards outside of 5 and see if I can get either to work, otherwise I will probably try the tight swing across the middle of the lane, though I am not especially comfortable swinging the lane much at all.

Close your eyes, throw the ball, and pray!

Seriously....as others have said, try going straight up the 5 board. It might help if you had a dryer lane ball but....with what you mentioned, the One might be the best bet. The skid/flip Doom might react too much but then again, it might not. All depends upon how you bowl. Good luck and hope you find it and score well.

I just read your description of your drilling of the doom.
Pin under ring...cg out...described as label leverage...ok.

This is an ideal type of drilling particularly if you ended up with weighthole on PAP...not label leverage however...but if it rolls right!

If really label leverage....pin next to ring and cg under ring that is about as appropriate for the sport shot usually as using a toothbrush to play a tennis match!

I honestly don't know a whole heck of a lot about drillings.  I leave that to my driller.  Here is how my two balls are set up:

Big One
Pin under Bridge
CG kicked to the right about 2 in.
Balance hole on a 45 deg. or so angle from the MB

Doom
Pin under and slightly right of the center of the ring
CG kicked half an inch to the right, nearly in my palm
No weight hole
