outside/in swing
« on: September 15, 2004, 02:15:40 AM »
Okay folks, I know that without seeing me you probably won't want to offer any advice, but I've got to ask anyway.  Last night I shot one of the toughest 593 sets of my life.  And I'm making it tough on myself.  For some reason I've developed this outside/in swing.  My arm flies out as it passes my hips on my downswing then comes from out there in and across at release.  Pretty much a consistent 3 to 4 board tug, unless of course I play for it.  I've tried setting up with the ball further in, further out (normally start it about 3/4 outside my hips), further up, further down, whatever.  No change.  Any suggestions?  I thought this morning that maybe I'm just trying to play to tight and a simple 2 board move left with my feet, changing nothing else, might help.  ?????

Describe your PUSHAWAY.  And is your HAND under or on the SIDE of the ball?

As you said, hard to tell without seeing.

For me a few things that cause this.

Were you trying to get extra on the ball by generating extra turn? The more I turn out my thumb (towards 3 o’clock) the more outside in my swing becomes. It seems to force my elbow into my body so to clear my hips I swing to the outside.

Two is if my back is bothering me I have some trouble getting my right hip out of the way. When that is happening I have to swing outside/in and tend to pull a lot of shots.

Third is timing. If I am consistently early to the line then I’ll pull the shot. The only time I don’t pull the shot is when I would release it early, but then it would have nothing on it and wouldn’t react properly.

Finally is fear. If you were playing the twig then you can subconsciously set your arm swing up that way to avoid dumping the ball in the channel.

Bushman, pushaway is straight forward, very slightly up (a la Jowdy).  Hand starts w/ thumb at about 3 and (hopefully) stays under the ball throughout.

Brenton, thanks for the tip.  I'll check on drifting out from swing plane.  I don't think that's it, but it just might be.

Pinbuster, I've been starting my thumb at between 2 and 3 for quite a while now.  However, that still could be the problem.  I'll go to a more 12 o'clock thumb and see if there is a difference.

'Bones, I'm playing the twig on this shot, so that may have something to do with it.  But, it seems to me that my shoulders are square at set up and at the finish.  My driller was watching last night and didn't mention anything about shoulders, so I don't think that's it.

So far I'm inclined to think it may be a combination of what Brenton said (stepping out of the swing plane) and what Pinbuster said (thumb position).  Have to get in a practice session and check.  thanks guys.

Rags,

If you are swinging the ball around your hips (one of my more frequent problems) try setting up with the ball further away from your body. This will allow the ball to fall straight back in the backswing and not cause the loop. It seems to work for me.

YMMV.

I'll add one point here Rags.

I use a 5 step and am righthanded.  My second step or first one with right foot is always a driftto the left with my right foot in front of the left.  This allows my right hip to get out of the way and the ball in a free swing down with my hip cleared out of the way.  I believe a lot of players use this method.  It allows me to play the lanes a lil straighter and gives me better timing and hip clearance.  Since, you are a big guy maybe something to think about.  Maybe you already do this.
