axis tilt vs cover prep

Going back to the show last week, they were talking about more axis tilt to kick the corners.  For me that usually isn't the case, the more axis tilt I have the worse I seem to carry.  I am not keeping the pins low enough to carry.  I prefer more or less surface to carry.  If I am getting weak 10's I will grab a duller ball and more inside alittle to carry.  Now, if it is a wrap 10 then I am thinking weaker move either with a ball or feet/target.  I don't really like to change hand positions much.  I spent the money on bowling balls and they are all setup for something different, so why not use them.

For lots of folks, more tilt and more sideways rotation will lead to corners and 2-10s.  You are not alone.  I frequently can tell when a teammate is going to leave a ten by when his hand goes around the ball.

Randy,

You are right, that is what Barnes was saying.  I just haven't found many conditions that allow me to come around the ball hard.  If my axis rotation is somewhere around 75 degrees or so, forget it, here comes a ten pin.  

A perfect example was last Tuesday, I was playing a nice line with about 50-60 degrees of rotation.  In the tenth of the third game I turned it hard and left my first 10 pin of the night.  I was watching a video of myself bowling and realized that my axis was way to high.  That is the reason for my lack of carry through the first 8 weeks.  I hadn't shot over 64? on the condition I averaged 220 on last year.  Well, I fixed that and shot 715 tuesday and actually felt good for a change.  It was a flaw in my pushaway causing the problem.

Like I stated before, usually the cover of the ball makes all the difference for me.

This is slightly off of the direction this topic has taken, but relates directly to the topic title.  

I used to have a much lower track than I do now.  When I learned to throw with a higher track, one of the things that I noticed is that coverstock prep is far more important now.  With my old, lower track I kept an arsenal of balls with different surface textures, and the differences between the surface textures were noticeable on the lane, but far from substantial.  Now, with a higher track, my surface changes create a much more substantial difference and I feel that my options are much improved.

I don't know if this characteristic is something that is generally true or not, it's just something that I've noticed in my game.

My theory is if you ring the 10, you need to burn up more energy by changing your hand position so you are more behind the shot, using a rougher textured surface or you could throw a slower shot.

If you leave a flat 10, or a 4 pin you need more rotation, less surface or more ball speed so that the ball saves a little more energy.

Jerry - what you are saying is only partly true.

It depends if the ball is rolling into the pocket or still hooking/skidding.

If the ball is skidding then yes you would need to have more friction or get into an earlier roll.  If the ball is rolling int the pocket and is losing energy then less friction and an up the side or more tilt may help.

Even these are just some of the things that can be done.
