Oval thumb hole vs. Round thumb hole
« on: April 06, 2004, 11:13:47 AM »
Can someone who uses oval thumb holes please tell me what difference it makes. I am constantly having thumb hole problems (too big one minute, to small the next due to swelling). I am seeking solutions.

An oval thumb hole just fits more snug and still allows you to get out of the ball cleanly.  When you have a circle thumb hole it's tough to get the pad and the top of your thumb snug enough without having the sides of your thumb smashed too tightly.  That's why people that use circles will generally have them drilled to fit the sides of their thumb and add tape to make up the difference on the padded and back side of the thumb.  If that makes any sense at all lol...

The only difference between an oval and a circle is that you won't drop the ball as much with an oval, what I mean by that is that your thumb won't slip out of the thumb hole as much.

once you try oval... you will never go back...

when i first changed from circle to oval i didnt notice THAT much of a difference... but when i started bowling again after retiring for 6 months(just like michael jordan ) i started with a ball drilled as a circle and it felt TERRIBLE!

good luck and high scoring

Very few bowlers' thumbs are actually round. Of those whose thumbs are round, only a few small percentage will stay round after you put enough pressure on your thumb when you hold the ball. (Please don't tell me there should be no pressure on the thumb. That's a relative term, not an absolute.)

That said, whether you thumb is mostly round and you start off with a round hole and have to bevel/sand the sides OR you start off with an oval thumb hole and have to sand the top to account for your thumb's current shape (maybe callouses), one always has to modify the thumb hole slightly.

Most people, I believe, are better off starting with oval thumb holes or inserts.

I can see that quite a few people use them. Thanks for the replies. I believe that I will put an oval in one of my balls and give it a try.

MY thumb shrinks and swells as it pleases.

so far the fit is night and day. I use have the ball drilled so it was at my biggest. the problem would be more of expansion sideways.

I would go through 10 pcs of tape in a night. Now I have Oval thumbs and I use maybe 1 pcs a night at the most.

you will have to work with it. I had one ball drilled a little bigger oval and It was too big.
I was using 700x700 ( I have no idea what that means LOL!) I went to 100x100 too big.

so I had the drill bit size reduced a 1/32 and split the oval size to 850x850. and it's the best  fit I have had without having to tinker all game with tape.

it's worth a try.

I use oval inserts for my fingers in most of my balls now (10th frame lifter/oval inserts) and I really want to try an oval thumb hole, I have had more trouble with thumb holes then you can ever imagine.

mecca3: It sounds like we have about the same thumb size; when I used ovals, I too was a 33/32.

Maybe I'm an exception, but the ovals didn't work well for me. The sides were a little too wide, so I tended to have to grab (which is never good). I played with 32/32 and even 31/32, but feel wasn't right. So I went back to traditional round where I could customize how much came off the sides.

However, as was pointed out, the problem with round is that you end up with slop in the front and/or back. I've found that Ron's Magic Carpet fixes most of this problem. The carpet takes care of the back, and one or two pieces of white tape usually fix the front.

I'd still recommend that bowlers at least try ovals before making a final choice.

Everyone should use oval thumb holes unless their thumb happens to be perfectly round which is extremely unusual.

Most bowlers who drill round holes shape the hole into an oval using tape, or magic carpets, or both.

I tried oval thumb inserts and did not like them. Like Steven I couldn’t find one that was right from the start and had to sand on them to get the right shape. Even then I didn’t like the fact that they were not tapered.

Oval thumb inserts are great if you happen to fit a size with little adjustment and you don’t mind the lack of taper.

I used to drill a 29/32 thumb hole and work the sides out by hand till the width is 63/64. Doing this much shaping it was hard to get a consistent feel in the thumb.

I finally went to custom thumb inserts a few years back. I took a thumb that I liked and had it replicated. Now I simply make and insert and slap it in and I’m done.
