Title: Oval vs. Power Lift Ovals
Post by: thewhiz on October 14, 2017, 10:47:48 PM
Is there much difference between the 2?  Will using the power Lift Ovals increase your span at all?

In my humble opinion, no.  I know there are guys out there who think they can feel 1/16" difference in span, but I'm not one of them.  If they lengthen your span at all it's very little, so assuming you're not stretched (span) now you could try them and be fine.

It's more about getting the "lift" aligned properly.   I see it quite often when someone brings a ball in to the shop and they have worn through the side of the insert because it was installed wrong.

Lift-type grips don't increase your span but they do increase the forward pitch (or decrease the reverse pitch) by 3/16" - 1/4".  That can make the spans feel longer.  --  JohnP

Lift type grips do increase your span slightly, this image shows why.

The wall where the lip is, is thicker.

That's why if your really trying to be accurate on drilling the span, You should know what type and size of inserts the player is going to use.

Then use a set a calipers to measure the wall thickness, so you can compensate for the wall thickness on the cut to cut span. That way the finished span is spot on.

^^^^^^

Correct.  The power ovals are not the same as the power lifts, which is why I said the difference in span is hardly noticeable.

It would be a slight difference in span, but the main difference is in the forward pitch you gain in the lift.
