Question for you Proshop guys
« on: July 27, 2007, 03:52:14 AM »
I recently kinda "inherited" the Proshop at my local center.  Between myself and my friend/co-operator we've got the knowledge covered.  Most of the necessary equipment is there as well(i.e drill press, plug cutter, scale, spinner, etc.)  We are located in a smaller center with 16 old wood lanes, and we are also in a pretty small town, with the next closest center being
Super Bowl about 30 miles away where they have an established proshop.  My problem is that most of our buisness is dedicated league bowlers, whom with our shop is dissarray for about the last 2-3 years have taken their buisness to the other shop.  We are working to correct this problem now, and are starting to get some of our buisness back.  My question is this, being a smaller shop in a smaller center we are unable financially to keep a large inventory, so in the past most things have just been ordered when requested, and not kept in stock.  We want to change that, we currently use Ace Mithcell as our supplier, but wondered who you smaller shops in our similar scenario where able to save to most money with, and still get good service?  Any input would be greatly appreciated...

I would make sure that you post shop hours and keep to them.  If you can expand your hours past the other shop's then you might find a niche of customers that find the other shop's hours inconvienent.

Wear a shirt or apron, some form of uniform that will become recognizable to your customers so they can spot you when you are out on the lanes.  If you look like every other bowler out there, only you stand in back of a drill press, its not as professional appearing as if you were wearing something designating your position as a pro shop employee/owner.  Keep a neat and tidy appearance both of yourself, your shop and its inventory no matter how small.

Like someone else posted, see if the other shop does not carry one of the major ball carriers and consider putting that equipment on your shelves.  But also keep a keen eye out for that works best in your center.  You mentioned that they are old wood lanes.  Maybe they get kind of dry, especially in the heads.  You might not want to carry as much dull covered equipment as a center with synthetic oily lanes.  The mid range to low range reactives are the most popular and less of an investment for you to stock.

Make sure you bowl league in your center.  It shows commradrie and support for the place where you earn your bread and butter.

Good luck,

Erin

Yup, "looking professional" is important, too. Get some uniform (e. g. polo with logo and name) and just do not wear ragged jeans or bermudas. The first visual impression as well as the recognition factor for frequent and occasional customers is not to be underestimated, especially if you want to sharpen your shop's profile towards the ambitious league bowler clientele.
