Ovens vs Water Baths
« on: September 21, 2008, 02:32:44 PM »
I was wondering what works better? I've used the oven method on my PG and it seemed to work out fine, but from other forums it seems that people don't encourage to use the oven. If you don't think I should use the oven method which is different ways to use the water bath method?

Not a matter of better. matter of works and do-not-use!
Home Ovens - bad (can't control the temperature)
water bath - safer

There's the dishwasher and there's the bath. See the COVERSTOCK PREPARATION forum. Set your preferences back to 120 days and do a search. There are several threads where the details are spelled out.

TAKE YOUR DISHES OUT! lol. put ball finger tips down on bottom rack. put in some soap like your gonna wash some dishes. u can set to quick wash and pot scrubber if have more then one and really want to get them good. just make sure that balls have no cracks in them or anything cuz they probley could and will get worse. i do this on my particle stuff or balls i bought that smell like smoke. never had a problem

You left off the most important part: turn off the drying cycle. It heats balls beyond the 140/150 degree safe margin!!!!

Oven:

Cons: uneven heat distribution (on top and bottom or from the sides)  maybe too much heat oil runs off the ball resulting in an uneven deoiling (oil accumulates at the bottom)
Pro: good heating
Sumup: for me too dangerous

Water:

Con: higher heat not possible phasing and soaking in of water
Pro: even heat distribution with the water no danger of getting too hot oil is taken awy by the water (if you use soap)

Sumup: This is what I use!

Dishwasher:
Combines oven and water method Pros but also cons (except for the heat distribution which should be even). Carefull! No drying step in the programm!

Sumup: same as oven... but "safer" than the oven imho.

As a reminder, the ovens that pro shops use are effective and are perfectly safe since they have special controls that hold a constant, safe temperature.  --  JohnP

That is unimportant.

Important is a careful temperature controll and the add of humidity that the "rejuvenator" uses to get the oil off tzhe ball and the ball is also rotated to ensure a good heating and removement of oil

some of the olders ones were just small ovens with low temp no higher than 150 degrees.. The old single ball ones. they looked like a really big microwave
