New Ball Rolling Over Thumb
« on: November 19, 2009, 06:43:23 AM »
I drilled a new Mutant Cell this am.

I put the same drilling on it that is on my Virtual Energy, Dual Thumb, which I have had on several balls.

I have doubled check all the measurements.  The ball rolls over the thumb.  Depending on my release, it will start on the thumb after a rev or two, then flare away, or it will start rolling ok, and about 15/20 feet down the lane it will start bumping down the lane.  I used two different wrist braces, same result.  I had three other balls with me drilled exactly the same measurements, one with the same layout and they all rolled great, (all shiny).

I have tried every release I know, but at some point it rolls over the thumb.

I have had this problem, three times in the last 6 months, everytime it has been a ball with an aggressive surface without polish.  This ball, my Dynamo and ocassionally my 930 Track.  I have never been able to solve the problem.

Questions:

1.  What thumb pitch change can I try to move my track away from my thumb?  I am currently 3/16 away, 1/8 forward.

2.  Can a too aggressive surface, cause a track to be in a different place than a shiny surface which enables the ball to skid a little at release.

3.  Any other suggestions?

Tom

I have had this problem with a Cell before. The Core determines where the bow ties on your track flare are and I think that something about the position of the core is causing this. I found that if I put just a little more side angle on my wrist at release and it solved the problem. But, even without doing that I have a 290 289 and 284 with that Cell going over the thumb hole most of the time.

If your thumping and also have a weight hole down in a ball, then your thumb might be exiting too quickly. Take a look at your actual thumb sizing in the ball. If you use an oval, check to see if the oval is true and lines up correctly. If it is off even 5*, it could make you flip your thumb out early to clear and put your track right on the thumb.

Also check where your axis pts are. Some folks can not throw pin under balls because it pulls the track down too much even with a hole down. If this is the case and you are looking for something that is smoother off friction, then you may have to adjust the height of your pin placements.

Myself I can only go pin slightly under my fingers. If I get the pin too close to the midline, I will thump thump all the way down the lane regardless of weight hole.

I use Grip-Loc Oval style switch grips, the angle of the oval and pitches is exactly the same as my other balls, I double checked.

This is a pin over drilling.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I am at a loss to figure out your problem. if a ball thumps when it leaves your hand, it is the thumb. if it thumps 15-20'''' down the lane, it should be the finger(middle). With your pap, you must have little to no tilt in order to track that close to the holes. It''''s almost as if you throw a full roller that tracks outside the holes. Have you measured your track circumference? also, neither your pin or mass bias are more than 6 3/4" from your pap, are they? This would cause reverse flare and would explain the situation. You might try cocking your wrist more to the left and coming around the ball more at release to get the track away from the holes.

I'm with Pooh on this...

...with that PAP and a pin up it doesn't make any sense.  Maybe the ball has a flat spot that you only hit some of the time?  Trust me it happens...we have a ball that we thought was hitting some holes, but after hitting it with a ring gage we found a small flat area on the ball that the track was hitting down lane.  Bit of a surprise...

Thanks everybody for your thoughts.  I e-mailed another driller friend, and asked him.  Below was his response:

"BALL
wrong pin placement
ball weighted with negative or thumb weight or both
ball weighted with bottom weight along with negative and thumb weight
high friction ball surface makes the ball stand up as soon as it hits the alley."

I did not weigh the top weight on this ball before I drilled it.  The box must have been mislabeled, when drilled it was negative 2+ ozs and with the dual thumb layout and the aggressive surface, this ball tracked over the thumb.

I have plugged the X hole.  Redrilled it +1 inch above the midline, about 10" towards the bottom of the ball with an 1 1/8 inch hole, 3 " deep, about 1 1/2" from the track on the bottom of the ball.  Similar to high flair X hole layout in the Brunsnick video.

Problem solved.

That cannot be accurate.  If you're clipping on the first few revs, your PAP has to be further away.

I determined my PAP using a low flare ball, ), which is recommended(some recommend using your spare ball.  The 4 1/2  1/2up is the PAP is use for drilling layout.

I made no attempt to determine the PAP on this ball.

If you read my last post, the problem has been resolved.

Thanks for you help.

I'm glad that you figured it out.  That wouldn't have been the first thing I would have checked, so I guess you asked the right person.  I wasn't trying to be combative in suggesting that your PAP is further away.  Maybe you release that low flare ball different from the equipment you are currently using.  If you hit the thumb on the first few revs, you are a high track bowler and you must take this in consideration when laying out your equipment.  If you continue to use this 4-1/2" over measurement as your PAP, you are going to continue to run into these problems or at very least not get the outcome you expect from the drilling.  I suggest you find your PAP again and verify with tape on the ball.
