The main problem with that is like the number of lanes of courtesy: if you don't do the same as most people, you come across as either stupid or an arrogant *ick. It doesn't make you look like an individualist, just someone who thinks they're better than everyone else. I do it just to get along. It's not like it's going to cause you pain or give up a principle or take a moral stand.

 

I also think it's more appropriate to congratulate someone who's just made a 2/10 or a 6/7 or just thrown 6 or 8 in a row and leaves a ringing 10 pin.

You don't have to go to each person when they return. I certainly do not do that.  If they pass near you on the way back, just stick out your hand. If you really do not like that person, there's no reason to ever get close to them, no less congratulate them.
