Title: OVER-hyped and UNDER-performance
Post by: devildog819 on March 02, 2009, 09:16:59 PM
Over the years, we all have seen that one ball that was to change the bowling world as we know it, listed in every magazine and print ad...You run out and purchase it thinking it was the holy grail and would lead you to first 300 game...Only to be disappointed at the ball, its performance, and loss of your money...

For me it was the Clear Optyx Reactive Resin...it was just a horrible ball and soon disappeared...

What was that ball for you?.

In answering the OP....for me it was the Ultimate Inferno.  I heard so many amazing things about the ball that I got one.  I shot one good series with the ball and that was it.  Tried just about every different surface possible on it and tried many different lines.  The  ball did nothing but disappoint me.

I know I am probably gonna get my head handed to me for this, but to me that ball was the biggest turd that I have ever owned.  Just a complete waste of my money and effort.

I had a Blueberry Buzzsaw that really rolled well for me.

Every ball jsut doesn't match up with every bowler.  Take me for example.  Slow speed, 13 mph or so on Quibica plus medium revs.  If I try to throw one of today's top line balls on typical house conditions it breaks out at 45 ft. and doesn't carry through the pins.  So I use weaker balls, designed for dry lane conditions and they work well for me but wouldn't break at all for my friends that throw 17 mph.  My best two balls right now are a Red Zone and when it breaks too much a Dynothane Energy.  --  JohnP

Brunswick's Scorchin' Inferno and Lane #1's Uranium Solid.  The SI was pretty good OOB, but didn't last.  The US just never worked out for me at all.  They probably just didn't match up to my game that well as I'm sure others will sing the praises of the same two balls.

for me ive theres been two big letdown balls.

#1  ebonite playmaker.  Horrible over under,  and the polish wore off after about 5 games.
#2 Lane #1 liberator.  Shot my best series and high game ever with this ball right off the drill press.  Since then i cant do anything with it. polished it up and its a wonderful spare ball and very good at picking up the 2-8

I agree, Ultimate Inferno.  Also, anything NV series and black widow series....most amazing balls for about 30 games then we all know what happens after that

Anything Lane #1, they have almost a cult following yet every one I've thrown makes me wonder why

Gotta agree w/Freakin10pin.  Oooops

Although I don't have one, I'd have to say the Elite balls of last year.  They were really overpriced & touted by "Captain Hook".  But I haven't seen a one at my center.

I agree with Freakin10pin.

Besides that my elite balls have been working great for me.   This year I've thrown the
Elite- black label-  300, 804
Elite- Gold label- the worst of the 4 I'm going to list, but nothing bad about it
Ogre SS- 290 and 298
Roto Grip Pluto- Have only thrown 3 games with it and it started to leave 10 pins after the first game.  269 first game.

no complaints about a ball this year, just the injury plagued bowler

I have a 16# morich awesome finish I want to trade.  1 season on it.    I am looking for 15# stuff

Supernova Solid

I am a Lane#1 Junkie...and love the rest of their lineup.  I cannot get this ball to move.  OOB, Polished, Sanded...will not move.  Stacked leverage drill with good specs, and I might as well throw a plastic.

I love the XP...but this Solid has me downright pissed.

Any of the Storm El Nino series.

Lane #1's Dirty Bomb and Hybrid Dirty Bomb are fast headed for this list, too.

EPX was by far the best ball I've had so far.

As for the most disappointing, I would have to say it's a tie between the Resurgence and The One. My Scout was hitting the pocket better than those two balls.

Second would be the Black Widow Bite, did not have the type of ball reaction that Hammer said it has.

If you actually read the description from the manufacturers and ball reps .... ITS EVERY BALL!!

Here is the Rival:
quote:
You know all about the great rivalries in sports. Michigan and Ohio State, Cards and Cubs, Yankees and Red Sox. Introducing the Rival. It has no competition. On medium to heavy oil this ball will leave the competition shaking their heads. Check this one out: this Rival is the best of everything you need. A benchmark ball that picks up in the middle of the lane and never quits.

This ball has NO COMPETITION!!!

How about Wild Ride:
quote:
The wild side of the ConneXion coverstock comes alive when the ball reaches the end of the oil pattern and then aggressively connects to the back-ends. The traction created provides a strong recoil reaction to the pocket that results in the most angular skid-snap reaction ever produced in a Brunswick ball. The aggressive connection of the Wild Ride to the lane surface inspires the confidence in the ball reaction that allows bowlers to play the lanes the way they want to.

The ball comes "ALIVE" at the end of the oil pattern.

AND MY FAVORITE - Hole Pounder Pearl:
quote:
this ball will bring your game to a level you''ve only fantasized about! With its predictable hook, and unbelievable hitting power, this ball is a MUST for any bowler! Make sure you have the right ball in your hand when you want to score BIG!

How much do these Guys make to write this stuff up?

My most disappointing ball was the Storm Trauma Response. I was looking for a heavy oil hooking ball and this was supposed to be the best ball at the time for heavy oil. This ball was nothing but a turd for me from day one. I'd send it into the oil and it would skid through the pin deck (I whiffed a 5-pin to the right once with this ball!), or it would roll out at my feet if I threw it on dryer conditions (which it wasn't made for).
I was expecting big arcing action from this ball and never got it to do that regardless of lane condition. At best it would just straighten up and lazily move to the left. Granted, I know that a ball isn't going to make a hockey stick type of move on heavy oil, but I still expect some kind of arcing action. I could probably have had it redrilled and gotten a different and better reaction, but it just didn't seem worth it to me.
On the plus side, I shot my second best series with this ball on a night when the condition called for a down-and-in shot. I just didn't like playing down-and-in if I could help it, so I still hated the ball even when I finally figured out the best condition for it.

I have a handful of bowling balls I did not like at all, but as far as OVER HYPED, I have 1.

1) EPX.  Ball was hyped as the biggest oil monster in the world by C300 and it turned out to be the demise of the company lol.  They spent how much time and money on research for this ball, and we all know how that worked out.  I'd say that is over hyped straight from the dictionary.  The ball cracked for me with in 10 games.

It amazes me that people are saying the Ultimate Inferno (ball of the year) Black Widow Solid (ball of the year) were over hyped and under performed.  Perhaps for you it did, but for the masses these are two of the best bowling balls ever made.

It may have been the layout, but my Complete NV was terrible.  It was just...well...terrible.  Like I said though, it was probably the layout that killed the ball for me.  I tried to like it, mostly because of the colors I like the color blue.

For me it was the Black Widow Pearl.  I loved the solid, but it just didn't complement the solid as I expected it to.  My purple vibe was a better compliment.
I've seen the Solid U listed on here several times, and I must say that for the first few months I had that ball, it was the best ball ever.  Then it completely died on me.

For me it's been anything storm or brunswick....Not bashing them they just don't match up with my game.

Kinda suprised to see the Uranuim Solid on here as much as it is. I've had mine for 5+ years now and still love it as much as when I got it. It did die on me for a while but after I gave it a good water bath it was like new again.

Oh well, what works for one doesn't work for all.

My biggest latest disappointment is my Smash Zone - but I am not sure about the reason. I had and have big control issues with it, and recently withna marked PAP I recognized that the ball flares a lot once it is off of my hand, almost done when it is through the arrows(!). Since the ball was not drilled for heavy and early roll, I suspect that there's something funky with the core, maybe a mismarked CG. From the feeling I would not bash it, but mine is not playable at all, unless you are happy with just a ball that hooks...

Another gruesome thing was an X-Factor RE-Loaded I had. After 3 games it lost all of its bite and had to be re-sanded to have some traction at all. Weird thing.

Columbia EPX T1 was my boat anchor.  First one had a core separate from the shell.  2nd one was free replacement and it shows same signs as I can see clear cracks in the core in my finger holes.  It was also heavily hyped as the dawn of a new era in coverstocks what a joke.

I think the only ball I was disappointed with was my Trauma Response.   I bought it used and had maybe 15 games on it and was polished like a mirror.  Well first nite I used it, I went 170-240-260.  And was like WOW this ball is awesome!!!   Well another league I bowled in typically put out a SERIOUSLY heavy oil shot, so i use the TR, and found it still hooked nice, but figured i could scuff it up and did and it hooked some more!!!

Well next week at the first league, bam my TR went straight lol......  I polished it up for about a week and couldnt get the same reaction.  But it was a awesome ball on my second league lol.

All balls have value. There will be some pattern sometime and some house that I will wish I had some ball I put in my junk pile. And usually I will realize it when i have exhausted every other ball, release, speed. axis rotation, axis tilt, loft and everything else. Which in other words mean it is too late. Beside, by this time it had to be the only ball that I did not bring...right?

Brunswick Fury. Years in development, and it was supposed to redefine high performance bowling. It didn't work, and Brunswick couldn't cover that debacle fast enough.

I keep mine because it's a case study in coverstock prep. I've tried every combination of 360-4000 grit finish (no polish, polish, rubbing compound) I know how to try, and nothing has emerged as real consistent. The most consistent reaction I've found is abralon 1000 grit with a small amount of Valentino Snake Oil (by hand).

The inconsistency does make it a decent practice ball.
