Overlapping leagues!
« on: September 01, 2009, 01:31:41 PM »
Anyone have a problem with the early shift league and late shift league either the early shift league is not done in time and the late shift league is it's time to practice? I'm on both leagues in this situation on both times in each. I have seen what it is like on the early shift league having a bunch of bowlers crowd into your space and it can seem like it can be rude by some when your league is trying to get done.

On the second league though, have been waiting at times over 15 minutes to a half hour past warm ups and the house will let some of the late shift leagues that have free lanes to warm up while the rest of us are left hanging. Part of the problem on my early league and the early league on the next night is the infamous "when it's your turn bowl" and people are too slow and that is why it takes too long. But really with faults aside, ever since my local alley has done remodeling, there it is difficult to get to the lane because of the lack of space which I have noticed over the years has a natural delay in time.

My early shift league used to get started at 6:30, practice at 6:20 and we were done at 8:15. Very worst case we were usually done at 8:30. Now most of us and the next night early shift are getting done past 8:30 on a fast night where both teams have a full team, 8:45 on an average night and a late night is somewhere past 9pm. There's not much to do at this very overcrowded alley on a Friday night with too many bowlers along with non bowling teenagers standing around. Then you feel like your in the way of everyone. Once the heard clears and bowling finally starts it's not so bad. But after the massive headaches last fall season which will be as busy as last season I suspect I don't want to quit the league yet without propositions.

Oh, the late shift is supposed to start at 8:45. Of course the house will not put most of the early shift bowlers on one side of the house and the late shift bowlers on the other. Why? Because they lose money from open play bowlers if they do that.

So, in my next late shift meeting, would myself proposing a start time of 9:15pm and practice starting at 9pm pass? I figure it won't help everything. But at least it will have everything starting close at the same time. Of course we are only talking about 15 minutes but some bowlers may think that would be "way too late". You can forget about the early shift starting at least 10 minutes early which they should but then they will argue they can't get off of work in time and yadda yadda. Which is true with some because some of the early shift bowlers like to show up when league has already started or when practice is about to end.

I was on an early shift that was constantly late getting finished. I was embarrassed, to say the least, and the next league was anxious and making lots of nasty comments.

What finally happened was we were mmoved from a starting time of 6:30 to a starting time of 6:00 by the house. Can't blame them or the 2nd shift. We had a ton of THOSE people who either couldn't be bothered to be THERE when it was their turn to bowl or else they needed 3 - 4 lanes of courtesy before they would even step up on the approach.

No problems here because there are no late shifts. Most leagues start around 6:30, our mens starts at 7.

We went to waiting the extra 15 minutes years ago.

Saves a lot of headaches in the parking lot and in the bowl.

But even still there are chronically late teams.

What has happened.

40 years ago without automatic scorers, with no one averaging over 190, many fewer strikes being thrown, 5 person teams would bowl their shifts in 2 1/2 hours. You would only be late if your lane broke down.

Today they can hardly get done in 2:45. Everybody is too busy drinking, talking, waiting for lane courtesy, or something to get up when it is their turn.

ya, you nailed it. But this isn't quite as apparent on my early Thursday league with most bowlers but the early Friday league seems to take their time and many times I have witnessed is the alcohol and socializing.

I forgot to add I think this house I bowl at is one of the last late Friday leagues still around that has been around forever. Most late Friday night leagues go to open play glow bowl these days.

Oh yeah....big problems

Friday night, the 6:30 league has a couple teams that just lag with their bowling, and many that WILL NOT get off the lanes when they are finished.  They have to chit chat, socialize, get their shoes on, etc.......while its clear that the next league is impatiently waiting to get onto the lanes, crowding the concourse.  You can chit chat all your want, on the concourse.

Our Friday night league was a 9pm league.  Then we concented to be a 9:15pm league because of this.  Last year, there were times we did not get on the lanes for practice until 9:40pm.  Our league compromised and compromised.  And every time we did so, the early league just took more time.

Even though the problem was discussed with the center manager, and assurances were made that she would talk to the sec. of the early league, nothing ever happened.

Many people have now left that 9pm league. Its dropped from 20 teams to 6 or 8 this summer.  Its too bad that nearly an entire league of people cannot understand that another entire league of people are waiting to use the lanes after them.  When the center management will not assist you, then all you can do is leave the league.

By the way, there is a full center (32 lanes) of first shift leagues and a full center of second shift leagues on Friday.  So its not possible to move to a different part of the house.  The other 9:15 league, on the other side of the house, got started way before we did.  And we were supposed to start at the same time.
