Just start him out with something entry level like a Tornado or Power Groove.  Keep it simple as cheap as possible to start.  He can always progress later down the road if he needs to.  Plus, does he throw it hard or is his ball speed slower?

Something simple, Trop Storm, Tornado, nothing aggressive.  Maxims and white dots work good.

Might keep the RAZYR in mind.  Decent cover, but pancake weightblock (like your maxim).

Would basically be an upgrade from plastic to reactive.

I would go with something higher RG and lower diff. Any of these should be good:
Roto Grip Mars
Lane 1 Chainsaw
900 G Link

Or you could go with the urethane route and go with a :
Lane1 Liberator
Storm Natural
Ogre Urethane
