Overturning wrist and muscling
« on: June 17, 2008, 11:04:49 AM »
I have been bowling for 2 years now and I am a right handed bowler who averages around 180. Ever since I started bowling I have been overturning my wrist and I have been muscling my ball. When I bowl it feels like I am gripping my bowling ball really tight and it makes my arm sore. How do I stop overturning my wrist and muscling my ball?

one thing to help your gripping problem is just to tighten up your thumb hole. it has worked wonders for me. it allows my release to be nearly grab free, which in turn allows my swing to ease up because i don't have to squeeze the ball.

A firm wrist also comes in handy - if you tend to break your wrist back upon the swing (unconsciously or on purpose), this will make you grip the ball, too, and cause muscling as well as aching.

Another thing to check is your footwork and timing - if you have fast feet, you will tend to muscle the swing to catch up with your feet when you reach the foul line, but this should not be that severe that it causes pain.

And, just as spartan suggests, check the grip on your ball. Chances are that the thumb hole is too big (use tape to make it snug, but not too tight), the thumb pitch is not correct and or the span could not fit anymore through changes (growth?) of your hand.

I know this gets said all the time but there really is no substitute for a GOOD ball driller. Could be hard to find one tho depending on where you live. Ask the best bowlers where they get their stuff drilled. The one thing I would suggest is even if the ball doesn't fit right and you have to squeeze make sure you keep the thumb straight and only squeeze with the front of the thumb.

Thanks guys. I now know my span on the new balls I have bought is way to small. I looked at a ball I got drilled when I was 13 years old and compared it with the ball I use now (I'm now 15), and the span of the ball I use now is smaller than the ball I used when I was 13. I have a spare ball that has a good span for my hand and I'm just gonna ask my local pro shop to make the span on my spare the span on my new bowling balls. And as for the muscling, I'll just use more tape like you guys suggested.
