how many lucky strikes.......
« on: February 18, 2004, 03:48:24 AM »
dose it take to shoot a 300?my first 300 I felt they were all good,my second 300 I pulled the shot a little on the 8th so I would say one.last night I carried a swisher that did'nt drive the five but the one banked off the side and came back across to knock it out.after the front nine I thought to my self,"I got my lucky one".on the first one in the tenth I threw the best looking ball all night but was left with a ringing nine pin.so now I have to say it takes two lucky strikes to hit a 300.
The harder I try the harder they fall

Not everyone needs a lucky strike to shoot 300, but it certainly doesn't hurt.  My first time I pulled the 11th ball dead flush brooklyn and it looked just as good as a real one.  The first one I had this year I had carried a light swisher on the 12th ball.  It wasn't horrible light but it wasn't as flush as the first 11.  I've seen people rip the rack for 12 balls and walk away with something other than 300.  Lucky strikes aren't neccessarily needed, but a little help can certainly make you feel a little better.

i personally watched a 298 bowled with 4 brooklyns and 2 heavy hits cutting down the 10 with late taps from rolling pins. his 12th ball was flush in the center of the pocket leaving a 7-9...

i don't care who makes it, how much it costs, or how sexy the ball looks. can i carry the 7 and level the deck with a $60 ball?

I saw someone a couple of weeks ago shoot a 289 and only hit the right side twice.it almost made me sick!this guy had so much rev and power it did,nt seem to matter where the ball hit.after that he followed up with a pair of 150 games, back to reality.

on my 300 it took one in the 8th frame because i never touched the head pin cause i slipped and it came off my hand, but the 298 i had 2 days earlier all 12 were flush just a bad break

Well, all 4 of my 300's have come with a lucky break or two,,,and here they go

1st 300, first 10 was all pocket shots, and pulled 11th one brooklyn and tripped the 6pin, 12th one was solid.  i was going up second arrow.  feb 11-2001

2nd 300, everything was in the pocket, but one shot went way right, yet still made it back, and 10th shot, went a bit high and tripped the 4 pin.  Nov 14-2001
And was playing 17-10.

3rd 300, was playing 25-15, and 2nd strike, went brooklyn, and i think like 7th or 8th frame had one that came off my hand spinning, like a top, and tripped the 4 pin, the rest killed the rack.  Dec 15,2003

4th 300, was playing 15-10, and i think like 5th or 6th strike, the ball went way out, to like 5 and came in very late, and had a late 10pin fall, and my last shot, i came over the top of the ball and it just was all side turn, going down the lane and it tripped the 4 pin late.   Feb 16,2004

So yes i would say some bit of luck helps.   I mean i have had games where i went the front 8 or 9 and left a 10pin or 8pin, or something yet ripped the pocket the whole game and got nothing, and have seen guys do the same,

yet, i have seen guys be all over the place and get a 300.  GO FIGURE

I"m still waiting on my first 300 game but I had 14 strikes in a row this weekend in a tournament at the end of the 2nd game and the start of the 3rd.  I had one shot of the 14 strikes while using my Time Zone that I felt were lucky because I came in light because I missed my mark by about 2 boards to the right.  It came back alot stronger than I expected and the pins danced all over the pin deck.  What a sweet feeling and an sign of releif from my mouth.

#1: Brooklyn in the 2nd and 4th.  Left lane wanted to jump early.  Made a big hand adjustment on that lane.  Everything else flush.

#2: Sent the 2nd way wide, didn't even watch it, figuring on a washout.  Apparently the "bumper" sent it back flush.

#3: All pretty good.  Moved left and right 1-2 boards every frame because of how the 4 and 10 were falling.

#4: #6 or 7 tripped a 4 and #11 was pretty light, all else flush.

My first chance for a 300 had 11 absolutely perfect balls, then yanked #12 through the nose for a 4-6-10.  I've had several other 11 strike games ruined by a 8 or 9, so I'd say my breaks are pretty even.

IMO, every three hundred bowled is lucky!  It's lucky in that you didn't get a ten-pin left on a great shot (7 for lefty's).

wow...........my first 300....12 perfect balls, bst game I ever thru, 1990....swinging ten out to 5 great back end...and still needed some help....in the 4th it looked like the 9 was gonna stand and the head pin came off the wall and took it out......didnt realize it at the time but it was a big break......the other interesting thing about that game was this......I was throwing so well that when I released number twelve I started celebrating.....never saw the ball hit the pins or the carry...nothing......just the roar from the 50or 60 people who happened to be watching. This was 1990 and back then a 300 got more attention than it does today.....dont remeber much about the other 2, just that they werent as nice...thanks for the memories

My only 300 (so far) had all 12 in the pocket. One 10 was very, very slightly late - otherwise, all were dead flush.
:-)

To answer the original question, though, I think all strikes require a slight bit of luck, or help from the pin gods. Because otherwise, I wouldn't have left 2 solid 7s and a stone 8 last night in the last game!!!

jim - you are right. I mis-stated the party line above. Sorry 'bout that!

The correct statement is:
If they're mine, they're NEVER lucky - it's always skill.

When the strikes are my opponent's, they're ALWAYS lucky - never skill.
