Hand Swelling..Help!!
« on: December 29, 2008, 03:43:48 AM »
I have this new ball and Ulta Zone.  I love this ball.  It's the first new ball ive had in a couple of years..The fit is nice. However, I've noticed that midway through the 2nd game, my hands begin to swell and i have to work my fingers into the ball.  I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to reduce Swelling while bowling....Anyone?  I managed to shoot decent this past saturday with it all 3 games but the swelling causes my to lose leverage and a lot of "tugged" shots.

Do you eat at all while you are bowling?  If so maybe it is salt intake?  Also drinking during bowling can cause swelling especially if you are eating at the same time (pretzels/popcorn/nachos) are the "big three" that I try and avoid while bowling.  Sometimes it can't be helped, but reducing swelling in your fingers is just a simple fact of cooling them off.  Cup of ice...freeze a potato after you have put "finger holes" in it...sounds stupid but it works. Run them under cold water can also assist in keeping the swelling down.  If you find you can't keep them from swelling, then get some chapstick and put it on your finger nails, this will allow your fingers to slide into the holes much easier.  FWIW.  I've done all of the above and for me...I lost weight...problem solved.

Throw a can of something non-carbonated in the freezer and hang onto it between shots.  Carbonated beverages will work, but they'll lose their fizz if you freeze 'em.  Who wants to drink a flat Coke after bowling? Yuck.

Make sure if you do the coke can in the freezer, DO NOT USE a diet.
They will explode in the freezer when then expand. Had cans in a fridge way in the back and they froze and popped the top.  No fun to clean up....

For the fingers, ditch your standard finger insert installation and try Vacu Grips, as they contour to your fingers whether swollen or normal sized.  For the thumb, Vise Hada Patch on the back of the thumb to reduce friction and hopefully reduce swelling.  Use rosin to keep your hand dry and keep your hand somewhat elevated if it begins to swell.

Assuming your using a fingertip grip with inserts, have your pro shop install vaccu grips or "flex grips".These will allow for your fingers swelling and shrinking and will allow a perfect fit. After switching to these,I would never consider going back to "fixed" grips! They are THAT much better! If your thumb is giving you trouble, have your pro shop guy sell you some white bowler's tape and show you where to put it.Since the thumb controls the release,it is even more important than the fingers. You should always size your thumb so that it doesn't hang on release when it is at it's biggest, and add tape when it shrinks.

Sucking on ice between frames helps keep your body temp down, will help prevent swelling.  Size your finger holes to fit when your fingers are swelled.  They'll be loose when they're not, but really doesn't make any difference - you only use the front of the hole to lift and turn anyway.  If you use grips you could try the vacu-grip or just use pieces of a business card behind the back of the grip.  --  JohnP

Fingers swelling ?  Easy solution, hold hand up approx shoulder height, fingers towards the ceiling.  This works, no wetness from potato, ice or drinks.  I have used this a number of times, fingers swell during tourneys where you are expected to change lanes between games.  No gimmick, just pure relief.

Alternative, is to do as John P stated, Have fingers drilled for swelling but do not glue tops of finger grips which will allow you to tighten up holes with small pieces of paper.  When fingers swell, just remove paper.....

If you wear a glove or brace, loosen the velcro between shots and try to keep your hand elevated. I have to do this in the summer and it does help.

I have found for me that drinking beer while bowling will make my thumb swell if I don't have enough water in my system. Hydrating in the hours before bowling has all but eliminated this problem.

Why is it happening...only on this ball and not other balls?

Something you bought that has a different fit than your other stuff?
Never redrilled?
