« on: January 20, 2009, 11:15:46 PM »
traditionally im the typical stand left throw right type of player but when the lanes are heavily oiled i dont have much success so i have been trying to get up the boards but im having a little trouble making the adjustment. any help?

how do you set up on the approach? here is one that i try, when i want to play straighter.
normally when i want to open up the lane, i will move my heels left, so my body is turned to the right a little bit. this helps so i don't have to open up my body as much, to get the ball right.

now when i want to square up, i will move my toes to the left instead, so my body is facing the left a little more. what this does for me, is when i bring my ball back, i am more square at the release point. and even if you do open up a tad, you won't throw it out to the right as much, so you will hopefully have a little more area to play with, and not worry about going past the headpin.

hope this helps and good luck!

Move right, square up, and use a straight up the back release which will impart more forward roll getting the ball moving earlier in the oil.

Ditto. If you are used to swing the lane, the right side close to the gutter might look intimidating when you try to go straight. Just stay square with the shoulders and stay behind the ball upon release, for an early roll.

You could try to go back to conventional grip.  I used to play straighter but I hook the ball so much now I can't stand right unless I'm at a tournament with heavy oil.

Try this get an old ball you dont care about(you will put it in the gutter many times trying this) try playing the 1-2 board area it will give you no room to swing it and when you can finally do this you can move left slightly where you can get it to the pocket. Also use weaker equipment it sounds like you are trying to play straight with strong equipment and also as everyone is saying come up the back minimize revs etc.

Great advice from a solid tournament player..../sarcasm

The tip about realigning your feet is a good tip.  This helps to direct your swing to the line you are trying to create on the lane.
