PAP question????
« on: August 19, 2009, 03:00:04 AM »
What can you tell from a bowler's PAP?? My PAP is 4 9/16 over and 3/8 up??  Waht layouts are good for someone with this PAP? I'm curious if any PBA guys (or PWBA ladies) have a similar measurement. To add: I have medium speed (in the 15-16 mph range on quibica)and a very high rev rate. Thanks for any comments or suggestions.

I'm getting a Brunswick Green Pearl Avalanche and trying to decide how to drill it. Also, trying to see if my favorite/most successful layouts work for others with a similar track or PAP. For the record, I've had more success with pin down under my middle or ring in a 4*3 type layout when there is a flood in the middle. I've never tried a 6"  pin to PAP layout. I wonder if this is why I typically do not like high end big hooking balls?

4 9/16" (basically 4 1/2") is what's called a high spinner.. If you want more length from a ball then a 6" pin to PAP would look like a left handed drilling but according to your PAP it would not be....

You can't know this to be true unless you know axis tilt.  I've seen bowlers with PAP's around 4" over with 10 degrees of axis tilt.  Definitely not spinners.  --  JohnP

The following is taken directly from Bowlingball.com. It is a good explanation of axis tilt. It also provides a clue (the position of your thumb at release) on how to alter your axis tilt.

"Axis tilt is the vertical angle at which the ball rotates. Axis tilt is what is commonly known as spin. Axis tilt is determined by the position of the thumb during the release. If the hand turns too early, the thumb exits on top of the ball. Bowlers with a high degree of axis tilt will be able to see the top of their hand during the release and follow through. Being able to have the thumb exit at the bottom of the down swing minimizes axis tilt.

Axis tilt will induce skid and reduce the amount of backend hook potential. With the core rotating in a more vertical fashion, oily lanes will be the enemy, drier lanes its friend."

Use the link below to go to the Tech Center at Buddies Pro shop.  First find and read the article titled "How to Measure Track Diameter".  Then go to the Layout and Drill Sheet Guide and find the article titled "Asymmetrical Layout Guide".  It contains a chart that relates track diameter to axis tilt.

Basically, the smaller the track diameter the higher the axis tilt and the closer the bowler is to being a "spinner".  A full roller has 0 axis tilt and a full spinner has 90 degrees of axis tilt.  (Theoretically, a full spinner's ball would spin on one small dot as it goes down the lane, but no one actually throws a ball like this - think about the Norm Duke trick shot where he gets the ball spinning then starts it slowly down the lane)  --  JohnP
