We are at the whim of the House...
« on: April 28, 2004, 11:39:29 PM »
After 34 & 33 weeks of establishing high averages by banking the ball off a THS w/ 'adult bumpers'. The House buys a new oiling machine and changes the shot to a heavy, flat, long pattern with out-of-bounds past 10. This with 2-3 weeks remaining in the season in our two $15K added Classic leagues.
I realize it's their money and they can do what they please. But, it just seems to a large number of us to be odd timing...

Obviously everyone has to bowl on the same surface. But, a team of straight shooting 160 avg bowlers is going to have a weighted advantage against a team of power strokers with 210-225 THS averages. Also, a team of high average bowlers who have prior knowledge of the new pattern and ample time to practice their games and condition their equipment to these changes will have a decided advantage.

Just venting here. First place is a memory and now there's only one & two weeks remaining...

Why isn't it a common (or even a mandated) practice for a House to post the days pattern so that all may start on equal footing? And not just the House Staff and their inner circles.

Also, does this sort of thing happen often in this sport? Or am I just being naive?

No kidding about being at the mercy of the lane man.

I shot 741 Monday before last.  This week on Monday I managed a 467 on what was supposed to be the same pattern.  I think the lane machine must have been ill because there appeared to be random patches of wet/dry all over the place.  It was skid/hook hook/skid all night.

If horse racing is the sport of kings, then surely bowling is a very good sport as well.

I addition to what Rags said.

I don’t know of any house that post it’s lane pattern, only a few tournaments.

I’m surprised they did this late in the year, normally it is the “please come back next year cake shot” the last month.

Thanks all for the replys.

This change (after a full year of week in and week out 'adult bumpers') was just a sudden shock to everyone's game. And the timing of it was what caused all the grumbling. This extreme wet-wetter and long condition brought almost  everyone's scores down drastically. But, to the straight down the boards bowler who didn't even notice there was a pattern change, it actually was a minor blessing. With the ball skidding all the way to the pins, they actually increased there chance for mixing up the pins. This gave them more strikes and easier spares than they usually see. Also seemed to make their spare shooting increase as the ball seemed to always slid into the pins instead of sometimes skidding/sometimes grabbing up.

End result was, the lower average bowlers were able to find their usual 6/7/8 or so marks a game they needed while the higher average bowlers couldn't find the two turkeys, etc.. they needed to overcome the big handicap differences.

Yes, ultimately, more difficult patterns will fall into the higher avg. bowler's favor. But with the end of the season in 1-2 weeks.... No time for ultimately this year.

Side note: In our $5K added men's league later in the same week, the previously mentioned House Staff bowlers suffered the same lousy fate. They bowled a team of high handicappers on this same tough condition and they were shut out in points. Which, by the way, took them out of the running for the last third.

I suppose it's safe to say, What goes around, comes around...

Thanks again for the venting space and the replys.
