stupid question about ball selection
« on: September 13, 2008, 02:44:56 AM »
When you guys encounter lanes with quite a bit of carry down, what type of ball do you find works best on it?
I'm not asking for a specific ball but what cover, drilling & if it matters differitial do you think works best.

In my case I use the same bowling ball with just a more firm hand release and different line towards the outside of the approach for me. Reactive polished cover, pin 1 inch right of ring finger and mass bias 1/2 inch right of thumb. No balance hole.

I used to notice carrydown alot as I always used med-higher rg balls and drillings and try to adjust the covers to help.I picked up some low rg balls with earlier layouts and haven't noticed any carry down, now I have to adjust the covers to keep them from burning up.so far I'm happy with the results but I have to have the proper mind set to adjust differently with the low rg stuff as they don't have the back end the high rg stuff dose.I'm seeing some good results from my Blast Zone @600 grt and a compound finish and my copperhead @1000 A+ polish.

Stronger solid reactives between 1000 & 2000 grit or the lighter load particle balls tend to be very good for me.
If it's not very bad I will just make a slight move outside to get the ball started earlier.

Carrydown is a myth in today's game. With the current equipment, oil is not pushed or moved downlane it is only absorbed into the coverstocks. The only place you'll find carrydown is if you happen to be bowling right after a birthday party or something, where everyone was throwing plastic.

That being said, the same effect is achieved on the lanes as carrydown. A lot of people mistake what they are seeing as carrydown, when actually the only thing that has happened is a loss of oil in the mids. When the oil is absorbed out of the midlanes, the ball tends to lose reaction downlane, causing the illusion of carrydown.

When this happens, you can do one of two things. First, you can grab a weak, weak ball and play up the outside of the track area. Secondly, moving deeper, where you can throw a more aggressive ball that will set up early, almost to the point of a "rollout" shot is your best bet.
--------------------
Righty
High rev rate (400-450 rpm)
Semi-high speed (16-17 mph)
Book average: 202

For a game based on the principles of science and math, bowling sure does have a bad habit of being illogical.

I have always thought that a ball burning up due to drying lanes has been misprecieved as carrydown. Not to say that people who bowl in leagues that aren't fresh oil don't run into carrydown it is just less common in my opinion than is often thought.

well the leagues i bowl in are mixed leagues & 90% of the bowlers in there are using plastic. the other night i was getting frustrated because you'd find the line to the pocket & get it to carry. then 2 frames later you'd play the exact same shot & the ball would never come out of a skid & usually wind up leaving a split. so i'm pretty sure there was oil moving down the lane. it seemed to be this way all night long (chasing the lanes).
i'm not complaining about the lanes, i'd take these conditions everyday of the week over that bone dry crap. i'm just trying to figure out what it is i need or should've been doing to get around this.

Same here. If I have been using a ball successfully so far, I'd rather stick with it than switching to a new ball. I either change my line more towards the gutter (say a 2+2 boards move of feet and target, and see what happens) or, alternatively, try to use a bit more hand to turn the corner on the old line.
