Hey 'Bones - You interested in some doctorin'?
« on: July 15, 2004, 11:34:09 PM »
I've got a strained right knee ligament -- feels like something I did before and, if it is the same, it's the MCL.  Anyway, it hurts like h*ll when I'm walking and I'm just glad it's not my slide leg or I'd be in big trouble.  I have an appointment to see an orthoped. (but not until 7/26) and my family doc has me on Dolobid which isn't helping too much with the pain.  What else can I do to keep me on the lanes??

I hear ya' -- don't know if I can do it, but I know what you're saying.  Unfortunately, being the dad of 4 and 9 yr. olds doesn't allow me much "hanging out" time.  I bought one of those knee braces with the magnets and I'll be damned if it doesn't seem to be helping!!

Went to the orthopod yesterday and, after he put me in EXTREME discomfort , the initial diagnosis is torn cartilage in the right knee.  I go for an MRI next Monday, so I won't know until 8/9 whether I'll need 'scoped or not.  For the first time ever, I'm giving up golf for the season since it seems the twisting motion hurts more than anything.  Will I be alright bowling if I wear a knee brace of some type?

Bones as much as I hate to admit this, you are right one more time. I had an MRI on my knee and had the results in less than 24 hours. Cost me all of last summer bowling too. But know it has recuperated well, and is only bothered by extreme workouts.

Nollster, best thoughts to quickly getting back to normal.

Join the club!  I had torn cartilage and slight tear of the meniscus in the knee of my sliding leg!!!  That happened 6 yrs ago.  Had orthroscopic surgery and was very timid about bowling again (especially when approaches can be a problem at times).  Anyway, I've since returned and though I still have pain (osteoarthritic condition), it isn't too bad.  I wear a high impact brace (varus brace) to adjust the load on the inner part of my knee.  Innovation Sports is the name of the company that custom made my brace.( http://www.innovationsports.com/ )  It helps a great deal!  I must admit, it becomes a mental thing that prevents you from trying.

Now I'm dealing with my right knee.  MRI showed no tear to cartilage but there's something wrong!  I return Thurs. to see what can be done.  Guess all that time compensating for the injured left leg has taken a toll on my right.  By the way, inclimate weather doesn't make things easier! ... LOL

Keep some Aleve or Motrin nearby!

Good Luck,

Vernon

What I dont understand is why it takes so long for a patient to learn the results of a test.  If you have the MRI next Monday, you should have the results by the next day.  I know doctors are busy, but there is no excuse for the delays that people have to endure these days.

The thing that really amazed me was the secretary at the office told me I might not be able to get the MRI done on 8/2 if HealthAmerica won't approve it.  She said that could take up to a MONTH!!  Mostly because my family practice didn't do any preliminary X-rays or give me any strengthening exercise programs.  Talk about nuts!!!  The results will be ready next day, it's the follow-up appointments that are hard to come by.  Thanks to everyone for your support -- it'll be tough, but, hopefully I won't be out too long!!

*** INJURY UPDATE ***

Bones -

The results are in....Nondisplaced fracture of the medial femoral condyle...How's that for funky??  Have no idea how it happened, but it's nice to know what the problem is.  The Dr. took me off the anti-inflammatory and put me on Tylenol -- feeling tons better.  There's really nothing that can be done but some light exercises to strengthen the quads.  He even wants me to bowl to test the progress, as long as I don't OVER do it....Golf is done for the season, though...
