Strong Point/Weak Point
« on: August 11, 2004, 10:21:57 AM »
That post with the most inconsistant part of your game has me thinking.  I have more Strong Points than weak points(so I've been told and after I've analyzed everything it seems as if so), but what's really keeping me from averaging 220+ on a house shot.  I finished the summer leagues with a 191 and 196 respectively and that's due to me using 1 ball the first 4 weeks of league(Teal Rhino) that doesn't even match up to the condition the league put out.  The last 6-7 weeks of both leagues I was averaging well into the 208-209 range, but I just can't seem to get over the hump.  I'm going to compile a list of Strong Points -vs- Weak Points, maybe it'll catch on

Strong Points
-Spare Shooting(I consider myself an above average spare shooter.  Really consistant on single pins as well as going straight at all spares)

-Can manipulate axis tilt(One problem I see with alot of bowlers is that they cannot manipulate their axis tilt, so they are stuck in one motion of the ball and struggle when the conditions conflict with their motion.  Since I can manipulate and change my tilt, I can play up the gutter with more forward roll, lower my track and spin the ball while raising speed so I can conquer dry, and get under and around the ball to open up the lane)

-Play Fairly well on Sport Shots(I can really hit a mark consistantly and control my speed so I can play safe on harder conditions and still not be far off from my house shot average.  I can stay in the 180-190 range when the lanes are really difficult since I can make spares and keep the ball in play).

-Thriving on Shorter conditions(When the lanes are drier or the condition is shorter, that's when I kill.  Since I have a lower natural track and good speed, friction never gives me a problem because I can line up and throw the ball as hard as I want, or get in, boom it out and have it come back)

Weak Points
-OIL!!!(I play terrible in lots of oil, and longer patterns until the lanes open up.  I'm thinking most of it has to do with the fact that I never have a ball that bites early and is super aggressive.  That's about to change once my Goliath gets in, but for the most part I catch hell on long patterns with a ton of juice and less friction because my natural style thrives on friction and I catch too much skate in oil and my ball never catches a roll)

-Lane transition(I am very knowledgeable in my equipment, but alot of times I have a hard time knowing when I am throwing the ball like crap vs. having the wrong piece of equipment in my hand.  Therefore when the lanes transition in league or tournaments I'm slow to adjust because the first thing that comes to mind is that I'm doing something different with my swing or release and I stay in the same zone too long.  It's nothing to see a set like this, 240-170-220, 170-250-200, or a block like this 180-190-240-240-210-160, 170-220-190-240-180-210.)

-Patience and Negativity(Alot of times instead of staying loose and waiting for the big moment to come, I force myself to make a shot when I don't have to.  Alot of times I'll tell myself this in the middle of a game when I'm getting down "Ok, big shot here...like this one is for it all, time to strike" instead of saying something like this, "Ok you're slowing up on the ball, time to relax your swing and execute")

If anyone has some words or advice or would like to chime in with their strengths and weaknesses, feel free to do so.
