Let's say I stink....
« on: February 21, 2006, 03:55:11 AM »
And I do, really.  I'm getting better, but I'm still incredibly inconsistent at times.  I really feel like I'm ready to turn that proverbial corner and sneak up on a 190+ average, but I have a bit of a problem.  It's my arsenal.  I went a little bit nuts when I first really got into bowling about a year ago, and since then I've bought a few different balls.  Part of the reason I bought as many as I did in a short time is that I switched to 15 pounds from 16, and another reason is that I was having problems with gaps when I went to tourneys.  I should also add that my average in tournament play on tough conditions is about 15 pins higher than my league average.  So on the supposedly "easy" medium house block, I routinely struggle.  What I was considering doing is starting to only bring one ball, or maybe two on league nights.  As it has been, I've been bringing 3 and sometimes 4.  Do you think it's a good idea to just bring one ball?  I look around the center and I see guys that are having more success than me never throwing anything but one ball, so I figure maybe I should do just that.

Now, the next question.  If I do start to bring just that one ball, which of the following do you think would be best?  I'm debating between one of my "middle of the road" balls hook-wise or my more controllable Uturn Pearl.  here's what I have that's good to go:

V2 Power (label leverage)
Smokin Inferno (Pin under bridge, trys to roll early but really doesn't)
Vendetta Sniper (3 3/8" by 4")
Uturn Pearl

I've had some success with all of these balls, with the Sniper being my newest piece and I'm least familiar with what it can do.  The V2 verges on too strong occasionally, and the Smokin and Uturn are what I would consider most controllable.  Thoughts?

Would people recommend sticking to the one ball and figuring out my problems, or do I follow what some people do and have a second strike ball to cover for different lane conditions?

Depends on your versatility and the transition of the lanes.

Versatility is pretty much non-existent for me to be honest. I have one release which isn't very strong but enough normally to score well. Changing releases to suit different conditions is not an option at the moment.

As for the lanes themselves, they get drier as the games go on. Now I try moving left to keep myself in the pocket, but it often does not work out. I have a feeling it's a mental thing, where I'm basically thinking "oh no the lanes are changing, now I'm finished" which is causing me to start struggling with my release.

Thankyou for the reply. When I'm relaxed I can hit my mark consistently and have a decent release which can see me score well.

When the lanes change and I become frustrated, my approach does tend to speed up and my release starts messing up because I try too hard. So yes, my mechanics aren't up to scratch in this situation.

What I'm not sure about is whether to use another ball to prevent me having to adjust so much, therefore keeping me more relaxed and able to keep the mechanics of my game fairly solid. Or do I go with what I have right now and work on the mental side of my game?

It does sound like we are in the similar ball-obsessed boat.    How do you like the Doom I see in your profile?  That's one I'd REALLY like to try, and might actually be a ball I could bring as my only ball.
