Particle Pearl Balls
« on: May 10, 2004, 12:20:36 AM »
Hi-
I consider myself pretty good at sorting out info on bowling equipment, but I am not sure I understand particle pearl bowling balls. Please give me some general info on what they are meant for, and what are some favorites out there. For instance, would a particle pearl ball be a good choice for broken down heads, with oil in the midlane & carrydown? Thanks.

Well...in theory, it would be a good choice, but it depends on HOW broken down the heads are.  While it is a pearl ball, many people forget that particle pearls are still PARTICLE BALLS.  I find myself forgetting this from time to time as well.  I personally am a big fan of particle pearls, I have thrown a few (Ebonite Afterburner (retired), Diesel Particle Pearl (for sale), and a Track EMB XF (still throw)) and liked them all at one point or another.  The typical reaction i've gotten out of particle pearls is natural length and smooth/arcy backend movements.  Depending on the ball, i've found that this would either help smooth out screaming backends (my XF) or cut through carrydown (my Diesel Particle Pearl).

As mentioned before, depending on how broken down the heads are, this might be a good choice.  If you are throwing a particle ball and need a little more length, a good step down would be a particle pearl drilled for a little bit of length.  However, if everything is checking up early, particle pearl is NOT the way to go, a VERY weak reactive pearl or perhaps even urethane is the way to go there.  Obviously urethane won't cut through oil, but you have to take the lesser of two evils if the heads really are that nasty.

Hope this helps!

In general I've noticed that the ones I have used have grabbed in the heads a little if they were dry.  And have backed off in the back when they are wet.

I really liked my Shock Zone it would work and then go away depending on carrydown.

My Riot Zone at times was awesome and then it would lose all hit on the back once a little carrydown came in, and then it would be difficult to move left to get it to hit on carrydown as it would grab in the heads.  Still a great ball.

In general on these conditons where one wants to smooth wet dry I've been better off in the past and again lately with my 3 3/8 X 1 drilled sledgehammer.
With a medium gloss finish, 600 sand with a gloss on ball. It is not great on carrydown but it also will skid better in the heads and allow me to play a very tight line on carrydown.

However given all this I bowl on some very wet dry lanes right now and have just picked up a Eraser Particle pearl.  I have seen this ball and it looks great on a lot of over under conditions.  It smooths out the Eraser core just a touch and seems to be more reactive than say a riot zone.  ie a lower concentration of particles.  I'm very excited to use it as I think it might be a nice fit for the over under conditions I'm seeing that don't have a enough head oil for a solid reactive.

Oh yes I had also seen a lot of the diesel particle pearl and that looked like a great ball too.

REgards,

PS note a lot of the pearl particles I've used have had higher rgs.
Summary in general earlier than a pearl reactive and less backend than a reactive or a smoothing out of backend.

Thanks for the responses guys...I was looking into a Eraser Particle Pearl, since I like the original Eraser.
