Handicap's and Ethics
« on: January 09, 2008, 03:32:43 PM »
This guy was telling me that he and his team always bowl bad the first night of league so they have high handicaps. Then their averages climb faster and they win more games with high handicaps. Do you think this is ethical? Would you do this?

In our league, we do not hand out any awards to anyone that hs not bowled less the 7 weeks. So that means the team you are talking about would have to bowl bad for 21 games to be able to reap the rewards.

But if they only bowl bad for one week, their average will still be high after 21 games. So sandbagging for one wekk does not make any sense. Even if they shot 550 the first week, then average 620 for the next 6 weeks, their average would still be 203.

But as far as ethics go, it is not right. There are a few people that can justify it, but only in their own minds...

My league does last years average for the first 3 weeks.  If you weren't in the league last year, you use your highest prior county or state average (if you weren't in the county). If you don't have either of those, you use the vacancy score as your average. Recently, we've found a way to stop the sandbagging - side pots and brackets.  There's too much money up for grabs for them to not score.

I have to say this:

This is all because bowling is no longer a hobby, a game or a sport. It's just a way to try to make more money. I think you could say some intergity has been lost.
