After finally getting a diagnosis on my knee (I've been experiencing this pain on and off for about a year), the doctor told my I have patellar tendonitis. I really don't know what this means besides that it's inflamed and I need to do rehab exercises, but he didn't say I can't bowl. He also said that I should do these exercises for a week, and then make a follow-up if it doesn't change. My question to you guys is if it does not get better, do you think my bowling career is in jeopardy?

Thanks for the input so far, really appreciate it. I had a college tournament this weekend I was sporting a knee brace. It did help support it, but the pain on the second day was close to excruciating. Gonna take this week slow, maybe bowl lightly in practice because I have another tournament this weekend, and then probably go for a follow-up next week. Not sure if this will heal, but want to make sure it isn't worse than tendonitis.

I'm actually experiencing pain in the back of the knee on my pivot leg. After some time in the gym, I expect the pain to subside a bit, but I'm also modifying the way I push into my slide to take some of the stress off my knee.
Getting older sucks. Why you're falling apart at 18 just baffles me.

A traditional knee brace doesn't offer much support for the patellar tendon, that's why I mentioned a strap. The strap puts pressure on the tendon and helps keep it stable. There will still be pain until you rest it up and then strengthen it, but the strap will make it manageable.
The best thing to do if you can is take a few weeks off, let the pain go away, and then work on strengthening it. Otherwise you will be dealing with the pain all year.

Nospare gave you excellent advice. Rest is the only thing that will improve
your condition. The tendon straps do help to ease pain. It should be a
major concern that you have this condition at such a young age. A referral
from your doctor to a physical therapist should yield some good advice.

Thanks to everyone. Yea I know it's horrible that I have this at 18 lol. And I really don't have much access to PT because I'm at college with no car here. I'm gonna look into the knee strap (even though the doctor gave me a knee sleeve) and try to get an MRI to see if it is more serious

i'm in the same boat you are, i was told my knee cap was out of place, shifted to the side about a quarter inch, and there is nothing that can really be done to fix it. There is surgery, but according to the doctor, it is only a temporary pain relief. He basically said that i have to live with it, and i'm only 20. I started riding a bike this summer and it helped a little to strengthen everything, but i still get sharp intense pains when i bowl more than two or three games. it really sucks...

its not uncommon for young people to have it. they also call it runners knee. a lot of people that play sports have it. especially basketball . it was 4 people on my aau team that had it while we were in high school. it just depends how bad it is. the tendonitis can also cause more knee issues sometime..

Donders Im in the same boat as you lol. Ive felt it for quite some time now. Usually I can deal with the pain the first day, but If I bowl a long tourney or something and then try to bowl again the day after its usually extremely painful.
It would seem the constant pressure from sliding on your knee would cause the tendons to tear.
I always thought about getting a knee strap for it, but now that im not bowling as much its not a big deal. Although even though im not bowling as much this year(no time for a league) it still acts up on me once in awhile
Just stick with the doctor, something I really should have gotten around too the last couple of years.

I wore these during part of my basketball career. I never really had a lot of trouble but once in a while they would flare up and these helped a lot. Lucky for me I haven't had a bit of trouble since I have only been playing rec ball for the past few years.

Do you think I should wear a sleeve when walking, or wear a strap then as well?
And do you think I should wear the knee strap when doing some standup biking for rehab?

I wouldn't wear anything unless you are having some pain. If the pain starts throw one on.

college, go to your physical education dept. and talk to people in their
athletic training staff.

It helps me a lot. Sometimes I have slight pain, when I bowl a dozen games in a weekend, but Ibuprofen knocks that out.

You say I only score because I'm a lefty... you whine about the crappy shot... the same crappy shot I average higher than you on? There are bowlers, and people who try to bowl. The bowlers find a way to score no matter the condition, and the people who try to bowl whine about the shot.

Rest it, then exercise it to build strength. I had it bad last season, had to take the season off and had some trouble walking up stairs because I bowled through the pain over the summer, then couldn't do it any more. It has become better, but I can't tell you how much because I messed up my rotator cuff and I'm not bowling again this season either (ugh).
