Carrydown, I don't get it
« on: October 09, 2009, 11:15:59 PM »
Title says it, I don't get it. If you take any ball that flares, how is it possible for it to deposit oil back onto the lane? The ball is flaring as it travels, which exposes new, dry coverstock to the lane surface. The only part of the ball that has oil on it, is when it crosses the bow tie. Am I to believe that a dot of oil is going to make a ball lay off at the pocket? Unlikely, considering the ball is rolling at this point. I have discussed with teammates that I believe drying heads and midlane are what kills the ball reaction, not oil downlane. Am I wrong here?

I think you might also be assuming that the track/flare/oil lines on your ball are 100% of the oil the ball rolls over.  Like picking up 100% of the lint with a tape lint brush.  If the balls did that, the lane would quickly be void of oil in that track area faster then you see it now.

Also even though there might not be any plastic, rubber or urethane balls on your league not everyone is playing the exact line to the pocket.  So you have that mud squishing out alongside the tires analogy (which is a good one) in various parts of the lane.  Its just more with plastic etc......

How much "carrydown" would occur from plastic balls being thrown across the boards aiming at the 10 pin? Most people get behind the ball a lot when sparing them, and the angle would track oil right through the breakpoint.

Might be only a small amount, but could be a cause of random squirting.

I have seldom run into anything that appeared to be carry down.

Much more often you find the heads and mid's have caused the ball to burn up it's energy early and not be able to make the turn.

Much more often I find the track area burned giving huge over/under.

The little carry down I have seen has come from patterns with excessively deep puddles in the middle.

Rather than play the pattern properly they take their hook monsters into the puddle and eventually drag some of the lane conditioner down the lane. Since they are relying on the maximum amount of hook they can get any reduction in hook causes them to miss the pocket.

Luckily since they can't seem to hit the same spot twice the little that is carried down each time is spread over such a large area it doesn't really matter much.

Confirms more or less my experience!

Look at carrydown like this.
After it rains there are puddles on the road.
Now as people drive thru the puddles you see there tracks leaving the puddle and slowly disappear further along.
Sooner or later the puddle will be gone.

Your ball does the same thing.
Moves the oil from the puddle down the lane.
Now if you feel like your ball doesn't come around the corner you've got a few options.
Either move inside a little bit to catch fresher oil to store more energy.
Move outside some and play a tug shot against your carrydown.
Or go to a shinier ball to clear the front end.
This stores more energy to come around the corner on the backend.
