the pin length refers to the distance from the ball's pin to the ball's center of gravity (cg) or "heavy spot". once a ball's drilled, the dynamic weight must meet abc specifications. finger half and thumb half of the ball can only be different by one ounce. same thing for the right side of the ball compared to the left side.
so, the cg mark is shown as the heavy spot on the ball, and aids the driller in being able to make the ball legal after drilling.
higher pin measurements allow for more options when drilling. a length of more than 4 1/2 to 5 inches is generally considered too long, however.
so, there is an optimum pin length for a particular drilling pattern (which determines ball reaction). in general, a pin between 2 to 4 inches allows for the most different drilling options.
there are some awesome drillings for short pin balls, don't get me wrong!!! just depends on what you want the ball to do.
