Brackets question - do you think this is fair?
« on: March 25, 2004, 02:55:19 AM »
This last weekend I bowled one of the larger Swiss tournaments in the northwest. The guys running the brackets did something I've NEVER seen before, and never dreamed would ever happen.

If I put myself in brackets - lets say 4 of em, and my hubby put me in brackets, lets say 4 of 'em, they would put the names in separately in the computer. Therefore, I could end up bowling myself in the first, second, OR third game of a match, effectively getting a bye.

I won the singles level competition on Saturday getting in only as myself, and lost to a couple of bowlers who got through on "byes", and made $32.50 in brackets. I was pretty upset. So, Sunday, I did exactly what I said above - I got myself into 4 brackets across 6 games, and my hubby put me in 3 brackets across 3 games. Sure enough, I bowled myself in the third game of a bracket, and took both first and second...

I personally don't agree with doing this at all - but if that's the way they're going to play the game, I guess I can use the system.

What do you think?

Definitely sounds messed up as well as a way for the bracket people to cherry pick who they want to see make money...

The system should have had a check that would prevent the same name from being entered twice in the same bracket.

Here's how he did it - he'd enter the bowler's last name with a different first initial for the "sponsor's" entry...

Usually people running brackets will do one of two things.

First, if they allow other to put anothe person in brackets, they will use an initial or an asterisk by a person's name to differentiate who paid for the bracket.  They will then do a quick check to make sure they do not meet at any point in the bracket.

Second, not allow people to put others into brackets at all.  This certainly eliminates any problems at all.  Quick story.  Big tourney with lots of brackets.  Very good bowler finds out that someone put him into all of the rest of the brackets he did not get into himself.  Bowler confronts person who put him in and wants a cut since he is doing the bowling.  Person says no.  Bowler shoots 110 on purpose.  Person loses all money since he was being an idiot for not giving him even a little bit of the cut.

Long story short, no one but the person bowling should be able to put themselves into brackets.  Causes too many headaches it is allowed.  Proof shown in your example mum, as well as mine.

I don't get what's wrong.

IF you paid for 8 spots and the positioning is done randomly,
then there is that possibility of bowling yourself.

Livespan...  I think that would depend on the software you use!  The one that we use for our brackets the computer does place the bowlers randomly, but never twice in the same bracket.

Doesn't seem right to me either!!

I see your point.

I guess we have always looked at as if you want to maximize
your chances you buy more spots.  IT would suck to buy half of the spots
on the board and still lose
