I always had a problem with Bob Learn's record.

He missed a 10 pin and was allowed to re-shoot and made the spare. There was the claim of fan interferance but no one has ever been allowed to replay a shot.

If not for that redo, he probably would have lost that match.

at that time( 1996 )the pba had a rule that if there was interference in front of the foul line the player could ask the tournament director for a ruling and possible receive a re-do. a fan down lane stood up as bob learn, jr., was getting ready to release the ball. bob learn, jr., was within his rights to ask for, and receive this assistance. if you watch the video of this match and you can read lips you'll see parker bohn III sitting there and while looking over at tournament director johnny campos say, "he get's that over". part of being a tournament director is making judgement calls and rules interpretation. johnny campos follwed the rules and made the correct call.

I wish I could call "interferance" on my Wednesday league. We followed the team that wanted to drink and have FUN(???) (hollaring a screaming and I mean HOLLARING and SCREAMING) to the point several "almost" fights ensued and they did not care. Every night I was at the end of my nervs, my ears were ringing and I was so jumpy and afraid I would be startled at the bottom of my approach. This of course was in the "best" mens league here in town.

I understand the situation with Learn.  There was no controversy over it at the time.  13 years later, we just don't expect that kind of ruling to be made.  Still, it was an impressive 4 games to watch.

i don't expect that type of ruling anymore either......that option is not available to a player anymore.

Much to Walter Ray's chagrin.  He's always fussing about a fan moving in his peripheral vision as he's going through his approach.  You'd swear the man never bowled a qualifying round in his life...

The most important moment since 1990 was in 1992 when McDowell won a tournament with a Nu-Line Excalibur. Without that win and the pub that a reactive bowling ball got, most if not all of the 900 and Bob Learn's record probably don't happen.

Qualifying was never done in the stadium setting with people along side the lanes. So I don't know what you are talking about.

If anyone should have ever gotten a redo it was Walter Ray when the guy shot a flash camera in his face from the arrows in an arena setting.

You're mostly right.  Qualifying did take place in an arena at the Battle at Little Creek some years ago.  I was there for that - no Walter Ray then, though.

What I meant by my comment was that qualifying rounds have people moving all over the place - along the concourse, up and down lanes to clear dead wood, and a bunch of other commotion.  I understand that televised finals are different because of their silence, but as I've often been told - if you're focused, it really doesn't matter.

Battle at little creek was all match play, with no qualifying.

And the fan walter cursed at took a picture right in his eyes just before release.
