Play to win.
« on: December 10, 2008, 05:47:44 AM »
No matter what the leauge I always play to win. I have noticed recently that with some bowlers around me its mostly about their average.

Example - A guy with 205 avg. Shoots 615 for the night (235, 200, 180). Our team loses all three games. He says things like...."Well at least I got my average tonight." Its like the third game really didn't matter to him because the pressure is off. He had a 25 pin lead in his mind. And yes he gets all worried when the situation is reversed...if his first game is awful, he is figuring out what he needs the next game to make up the difference.

I wanted to yell at him. We lost. It doesn't matter what you shot!

I don't get it. I shot 658 last time in league. The last game I was 40 pins over average and we lost it. It did not make me feel any better that I was well over average for the night. We lost 3 games.

I play to win (Could care less about average when bowling for the night).

Is that wrong? I guess some on my team think so.
Talkin' Trash!

I understand where you're coming from, but it IS kind of a tough pill to swallow, either way.

For example, I shot 470 last nite in Position Round. This is in one of my toughest leagues, on one of my toughest conditions. I was miserable that I didn't at least shoot my average. the only thing that I did do was strike out in the tenth, to close the door on any chance the other team had of sneaking a win in the last game. So at least I felt like I contributed something.

But I should have been happy that we won all four! But I was still miserable!

I always have personal goals, but, winning over rides anything I can do by myself.

I want to bowl at least my average, but I know that if I reach some of my personal goals, it gives my team a better chance at winning.

If I shoot OVER my average and we lose, bowling well myself is little consolation, even if I do reach some of my goals..  However, if I bowl poorly and we win, winning IS a consolation for performing badly.

I guess I am the opposite.
I am competitive, but moreso in a personal sense.
I can't control how my team does, but I can control my own outcomes.
Beating my average is all that I can do. I am happy if I do that.
If I beat the other guy I am matched against, that is also good. But I don't get upset over team points.

I can see it both ways I guess.
I have two players on my team that have weak mental games. I can usually tell before the end of the first game how they will bowl for the night.
I always want to bowl my best, whatever that happens to be. I  can not control the  fact that they can't be more positive and make adjustments to bowl better.
However when they bowl good and give me a chance to win the game for us in the tenth and I don't get it done I am disappointed.

No offense but I do both. On the summer leagues I don't care as much but right now in winter leagues I'm trying to book average so it is a big deal. would like to win and bowl well at the same time.

I could care less about my team, unless it's a big money team league.  I bowl leagues for the fun of bowling and to make some money.

We win cool, we lose, oh well.

I don't bag though, I shoot the best I can, and let the average end up where it may.

I bowled in a team tournament over the weekend and at first I was pretty pumped up, but my team was bad.  Every win got you 100 bonus pins, and out of 11 games, I think we got like 500 pins, and 200 pins everyone else got as well.  We finished 7th out of 10 in our division and probably 17th or 18th overall.

I won money in jackpots, so that was all that mattered to me.  I can't control my teammates opening nearly every single time in the 10th so we could lose by 11.  I can control what I do...that's all.

There's something to be said for people who only aspire to be average - they allow people like you to win their leagues. Since you and your team mate have such a difference of opinion/approach on league play, search for a replacement team mate or find another team more inline with your views next season. Usually, everyone is happier that way.
